Phil's answer to the Harpocrates question drives me nuts because I had pretty much already accepted that it was just some kind of bait or in joke and now he tells us that it really was supposed to be someone but that he isn't sure he remembers who??? So he's just not gonna tell us????
Harpocrates is Quackity, hear me out...
So I'm a pagan and focus most of my worship in the Greek pantheon so the syndicate lore is like my cocaine. I live for it. And the fact that there's a secret member that we get to know their code name but know who they are? It's amazing. So I feel that I have to throw my overly invested hat in this ring and lay out why I think Harpocrates is, or rather was, Quackity.
So, first of all, you might say, user meryemsimone, Quackity isn't an anarchist, he can't be in their book club! Well, I think there's plenty of reason that Techno might have believed Quackity was an anarchist. This centres mostly around their brief partnership against the Egg.
Techno quite recently before teaming up with Quackity had a huge breakdown in relationship with Tommy over the fact that he was done being seen as a weapon that people could use to fight their own battles. So how did Quackity convince Techno to not only help take down the egg, but that Quackity had put their previous conflict behind them enough for him to be okay with Quackity showing up unannounced at his home again after what happened the last time we saw Quackity show up at Techno's cabin.
Quackity is a politician through and through and he's a liar. It's clear to everyone watching that Quackity has manipulated Techno and is keeping the fact of Las Nevadas' founding a secret from Techno as well. In this position, I think it's entirely plausible that Techno was willing to believe Quackity had learned from Doomsday, just like Ranboo and Niki had. Just like he believes Wilbur might be changed despite literally founding L'Manberg and how Wilbur was the leader of a coup that used Techno. Techno would believe Quackity if Quackity tried hard enough.
Now specifically the Egg threat. Techno had no reason to really know of, let alone feel threatened by the Egg with how far away his cabin is from the vines, unless he had someone who knew about the Eggpire to tell him about the threat. But who would have been following the Eggpire's movements to tell Techno besides Quackity? Techno wouldn't believe Quackity showing up one day and telling him there's this new threat and he needs Techno to fight it, not without them having some sort of reconciliation before the Red Banquet. Now let's say coordinating a covert strike between Purpled, Techno and Quackity would take 3 weeks, just because seeing any of them together would raise alarm so they'd have to be stealthy, and then it takes a month of a friendship before Quackity would safely be able to ask Techno for help, that puts Quackity reaching out to work things out with Techno at around the exact same time they have decided to form the syndicate.
Next the basic name symbolism. Secrecy and Silence.
As a basis for all of the above, Quackity would come across as a very secretive person. Quackity is smart enough to lean into that. I see Quackity pushing the angle that he was at one time Schlatt's fiance and after going from Schlatt to Wilbur to Tubbo's cabinet, that he had become a much less trusting person and became more secretive as a result. Saying it up front I think would gain a lot of respect from Techno too.
As for Silence, Quackity is definitely prone to ghosting people and therby leaving them in silence. It's not the dominant connection but it's true enough.
Now you might say, again, user meryemsimone, your defense of a contradiction is longer than your own argument for the codename, what are you doing? turn back! But here is where this theory becomes my favourite. Harpocrates is a misinterpretation. The Greeks misinterpreted statues of the Egyptians HUMONGOUSLY. Harpocrates is actually Heru-pa-khered. Better known as Horus the Child.
Okay so here's how that misinterpretation as it happened because it's very simple. The Greeks thought that the pose below was a shushing pose. In reality, to the Egyptians, it was a common pose denoting youth, and because he was a common figure in the government buildings, they associated him with hiding indiscretion I guess? The most common story showing this interpretation of Harpocrates shows Aphrodite giving a rose to Eros who then passes it along to Harpocrates so that he will ensure her affairs remain secret. This is also where we get the term 'sub rosa' which basically just means that anything said while 'sub rosa' will remain secret.
Now, Technotwt and Ennead enthusiasts might be somewhat familiar with the info I'm about to give since you guessed it, we're talking about Horus and Seth now!
Horus the Child or Horus the Younger or Heru-pa-khered or Har-pa-khered, however you want to call him, is the child version of the sky god Horus. Eventually the child you see above grows up and he and his uncle, Seth, God of War, Chaos, Deserts and/or Storms (depending on who you ask), both want to be King of the Gods. It's time for them to battle for 80+ years and make all of their family exhausted of them. There's a weird thing where Horus's mom puts Horus's semen on some lettuce that Seth really likes and that poisons Seth but also at the same time might have created the moon or maybe just gave him a cool head disc, again depending on who you ask. That one inspired that person (they deactivated I think?) twitter handle on the day of writing this post. But during these 80+ years of conflict there's something important that happened that I would like to share.
During one of these many encounters and battles they have for the honour of the throne, Horus kinda rips off one of Seth's testicles, damaging his pride forever, but in this same conflict Seth gouges out Horus' eyes and when they are healed the left eye remains permanently damaged, or some other variation that involves eye-gouging and ends with specifically Horus's left eye remaining damaged but the right eye staying healed. This story serves to explain theologically why the sun is brighter than the moon, so the fact that one of his eyes remains scarred stays pretty consistent throughout all the different versions of Seth and Horus's legendary battles.
Other than those two... notable stories, Basically it always goes along the lines of Seth is more powerful, but Horus is smarter and is also incredibly powerful and eventually, Seth concedes to Horus, sometimes after Osiris vouches for Horus from beyond the grave, sometimes they kinda become the same person, ancient Egyptian(read: all) myths are weird, and Horus then goes on to personify the living Pharoah, aka ruler of Egypt while Horus' father and Seth's brother, Osiris, represents the dead Pharoah as he was the previous King of the Gods. Seth also was the one who killed Osiris by the way.
Bonus, Seth is commonly associated with a non-real, dangerous, long-snouted land animal, often associated with hippos and crocodiles and even jackals sometimes. Hieroglyph as seen below looks kinda like a dog but there's a general consensus that this is an imaginary animal that was seen as very intimidating and as a direct symbol of chaos. Horus though, he's associated with falcons, sometimes hawks. He's a birdman.
Okay so ignoring the lettuce story, replace Horus with Quackity, Seth with Techno and Osiris with Wilbur for a little bit of extra spice? Horus's relationship with Seth is surprisingly similar to Quackity's with Techno. Down to the fact that Quackity's left eye was permanently scarred by Techno. Osiris-Wilbur is also a fun thing with his whole other half comments to Quackity with that being the same person detail. Add in Quackity's fascination with Foolish's builds and the fact that Quackity is the leader of a desert nation, and it seems super clear.
All told here's how I think this would've vaguely went down.
Janurary 25th Sam gets trapped by the Egg and Quackity realized that the Egg needs to be stopped. January 27th(ish this is by memory), Quackity meets with Bad and visits the Egg. This is when he would have officially started figuring out how to take down the Egg once and for all. He has Sam involved closely with the daily actions of the Eggpire and giving him updates, and in the meantime, Quackity realizes he need's Techno's constitution to destroy the Egg. But he was there Doomsday, he knows he has to play the long haul, so he goes to Techno and he tells him "look, you won. But I don't know how this anarchy thing works. So genuinely, teach me." and so he spends time slowly building this relationship with Techno. It takes a while but eventually, Techno invites him to join a group he's putting together. A glorified book club for like minded people to get together. Mostly a social thing even. Quackity knows he's in. He insists that he doesn't know if he trusts himself getting too involved in something that could seem like a cabinet or the butcher army again to avoid having to actually attend but Techno, the big softie that he truly is, says there's no obligation, but if he wants to be a part of it, they're gonna use codenames so just give him one. So Quackity comes up with Harpocrates. He keeps up the facade and makes one last attempt to handle it all on his own and blows up the egg, but he finds out about its defense mechanism and knows he has to bring in Techno and Purpled. After the Egg was handled, he wouldn't need Techno anymore. No more need to keep up an anarchist's appearance, right? Into the prison he goes.
Now, Techno, who is the only one who knew who Harpocrates was, has to either leave up Quackity's codename or explain that Quackity knows about the syndicate to the other members, which would cause some conflict because literally why the heck would you trust Quackity with the secret anarchy club man, think it through.
Basically, there's so many parallels and my brain can't help but believe this theory because it goes into all the history of the myths which is like the reason I adore Techno's lore and content. He hooked me in with the obscure history and greek mythology references, my brain can't help but scream about this connection.
Harpocrates is the Samsung Smart Fridge.
How's that for a twist?!
(Philza doesn't know and it's gonna be real awkward when he finds out.)
hey guys ahah harpocrates has a stasis
Someone in Techno's comment section was joking about FitMC joining Dream SMP because it's the Youngest Anarchy Server in Minecraft
And I was like wait what if Harpocrates IS Fit?
IT'S NOT EVEN THAT IMPLAUSIBLE
TECHNO KNOWS HIM FROM SMP EARTH
THEY HAD AN ALLIANCE
HE COULD HAVE BEEN SECRETLY ADDED TO THE SERVER AND JUST WAITING FOR THE REVEAL
Any theories on who Harpocrates is? I've seen theories ranging from Karl, Foolish to Hannah (based more on symbolism rather than motivation), to Puffy or Wilbur (these two based more on character motivation).
Well, the problem really is, that they gave us nothing. It’s a complete mystery box. So it really could be anyone. Could be Foolish, could be Philza’s fridge wife, who knows?
Now, if you want to know some of the ideas that I like, than here:
1. It’s Secrecy - This is pretentious in the exact way that I adore. The concept of secrecy is sitting at the table. It’s an in-world metaphor to show that the most important aspect of the syndicate is that it remains a secret - and Techno is pretentious enough that he would do it.
2. It’s a joke - This is option 1, just as a troll. The member is never going to be revealed, it will be a running gag that it will always stay a secret, who Harpocrates is. We’ll never know and it will remain a mystery forever - Techno’s enough of a troll to also do that.
3. Callahan - ... I just want more Callahan in my life. Also, his big thing is that he never speaks, so who would be better suited for the role of God of Confidentiality?
4. It’s a new member of the Dream SMP - Ever since Ranboo’s introduction, it has kinda become en vogue to have a fully-fleshed out backstory for your character ready to go. You see it a bit with Puffy, Foolish and Hannah. So this would just be next logical step to take - introduce a character already completely integrated as a vital part of an on-going storyline. Something similar was done with Phil, but he also had the benefit of intertextual build-up. I’d like this option to happen, but I don’t know how likely it is.
Now, here’s some members that I think it’s definitely not: Tommy, Tubbo, BadBoyHalo.
People, I’m skeptical about:
1. Puffy - It makes sense, but we already know that she’s sympathetic to Technoblade. Building up a mystery box only to reveal it’s the most likely option is a bit of a weird dramatic choice. Would probably be seen as anticlimactic.
2. Wilbur - Now, unless c!Techno knows how to do voodoo, I don’t see how he would have figured out the Wilbur would be revived. They would have to do some legwork to explain that. Now Ghostbur/Glattbur on the other hand, we haven’t seen him in a hot minute, so this is more likely.
3. Hannah - She has recently been heavily featured in the Egg-storyline, in a way where it would be weird to reveal her as Harpocrates now. Like, if we knew she was part of the Syndicate and then she was abducted by the Eggpire, then we’d have tension - that’s a pretty good dramatic arc here. But revealing it after the fact, would be ... harder pull off.
4. Purpled - See Hannah.
Any idea on who Harpocrates is? My head is saying Dream, but my heart is saying Karl. In all seriousness, I feel like, from a doylist perspective, Dream is going to be Harpocrates. I think that's how the narrative is going to play out.
I have no idea, dude, I actually went through the entire whitelist earlier trying to figure it out but I really don’t know what to think. And the fact that his theme is secrets kinda means it could LITERALLY be almost anyone, since he could even be pretending to be something he's not. And even the pronouns could be a trick, might not even be a "he".
That said, I was partly joking about FitMC but honestly that would be so cool. I kinda hope it IS a new member.
I agree that Dream is a very plausible option, unfortunately. But at the same time it would feel so wrong to me. Dream is definitely not an anarchist, or at least he definitely wasn't when he went to prison, and it doesn't really sound like he's become one while in there (although it's not unthinkable, people do become anarchists in prison, it's kind of a thing). And what would have had to have happened off-screen to make Techno and Phil trust him? Because they didn't trust him even when they were working together, what would convince them to change their minds?
I guess one possibility that comes to mind is that Dream might have sent messages to Techno through enderwalk!Ranboo. It's not impossible at least. There isn't really evidence that he has? But it could have happened. And he might have convinced Techno into believing that he was an anarchist now, who knows.
Narratively speaking... I don't actually know if it makes sense to me. Maybe if Dream joined in good faith it could be interesting but it would be a huge shift in his characterisation with no build up... and if he joins to trick and use them, idk, that just sounds repetitive both for him and for Techno. None of this is really speaking to me, I'm gonna be honest. I feel like the more interesting option for the narrative would be that Techno helps Dream break out, fulfilling his favour, and then Techno has to deal with whatever consequences result from Dream getting out.
It WOULD be funny if Techno was making fun of him for not showing up to the first meeting while he was LITERALLY IN PRISON tho. And I guess it might explain their dismissiveness towards the news that Dream beat Tommy to death, although I think that was more of a meta thing than some kind of hint.
Hey speaking of enderwalk!Ranboo, has anyone suggested him as the possible Harpo? That would honestly be hilarious. Ranboo unknowingly sitting right across the table from literally himself. One side named after secrets, the other forgetfulness. It would mean Techno and Phil secretly know about enderwalk!Ranboo, which would definitely be a twist.
Not the MOST plausible idea maybe but it's an INTERESTING one.
