Now, a lore dump on what the Constant was like pre-Maxwell/Charlie.
There were three different domains on the mainland of the Constant. Those being the domain of Alter, the domain of Tenebrous, and the very small space between them.
The space between was a cold dessert, only broken up with a few dead trees. An eternal night over the realm. There, imps like Wortox came to be. Imps refused to bow down to any aspect of Them, and started to form their own magic. Partially by stealing some of Theirs, but also from themselves. Particularly powerful imps would become krampi, and one imp who managed to master magic to an incredibly degree and planned to share it with all the other races in the Constant became who we now know as Klaus. However, both Alter and Tenebrous, fearing loosing their subjects or beings using magic with no connection to them, sealed Klaus away.
In Alter's realm, lived the pigs. They built temples there, and worshipped Alter, who in return gave them the ability to enter a different form when blessed with Their power. Back then, they could control this form. However, despite their devotion, the pigs yearned for more, and to discover other forces beyond Alter, especially the ones on the ground.
Lastly, under the Earth lived the crawlers (aka the ancients). At first, they worshipped Alter, as they assumed that the resources that would fall down in earthquakes came from Them (as well as the fact that looking up from the few wounds holes in the ground and seeing the 'moon', it did look quite ethereal). However, the crawlers soon would realize that the very ground above and bellow them was actually the entity giving them all these 'blessings', and started to worship Them. However, their extreme devotion to their beliefs lead them to being corrupted by shadows, and metamorphosising their spirits out of their bodies (the spirits which then Tenebrous then ate and forced to join his midnight parade). This happened before the first humans (Maxwell and Charlie) entered the Constant. (Well, at least the first to enter and not be immedeatly swallowed whole by Them)
The imps, saddened by the dissapearance of their most prominent member and not understanding these new creatures, went into hiding. And as more paths opened up to the pigs, they ventured, going into different domains. After those three years, eventually both Maxwell and Charlie would fall to the same fate they have in game (Charlie first, then Maxwell) and they would remain like that for around 300 years.
(Drawing of each species. Crawlers especially vary a lot in their design)
When Maxwell and Charlie did enter, they did so in the space between, and with their presence, the Constant slowly began to mutate. Soon, grass grew on the floor and pine trees rose from the ground. The two spent around 3 years (a seasonal cycle in the Constant is 70 days, but whenever I say a year I do mean the actual 365-366 day period) as regular survivors in the Constant (multiple of the failed srvivor set pieces are actually those two).
In those 300 years, most happened with the pigs. Some ventured to the ground and took in the practice of trading, others went out to the sea. Those sailing through the 'middle' from the mainland would end up in the realm of a resting aspect of Them, the aspect of water (this place is also known as the one you are in in shipwrecked) those sailing south or north would enter the realm of the Gnaw (aspect of hunger). Those meanwhile those venturing from the realm of Alter towards where the sun seemed to enter the realm of the aspect of fire (aka where forge takes place). In anger for them abandoning Them, Alter turned the blessing They gave to the pigs into a Curse, thus the werepigs.
(I'm gonna make a more in depth post later describing the pigs in more detail and each culture)
While those enteties have realms of their own, they do on ocassion enter the mainland Constant. Like the flames of a lit campfire, the sea thrashing against the shore, and the wormholes in the ground. In fact, beings who either went through too many....strange looking wormholes, or were transformed by their own ravenous hunger, would become merms. (Though an INCREDIBLE amount of exposure was required to do this, as Gnaw is really weak on the mainland) Eventually merms evolved into an entire culture of their own, and had offspring which were just naturally mermen. There are also natural merms that came from the shores of the gorge, but Gnaw was, expectedly, gluttonous and transformed other species into the one that served them.
Anddd that's the basics of the world before the nightmare throne, as well as some of Their aspects. I will likely cover eaxh aspect in more detail later, there is quite a bit to say (like, I haven't even explained the Midnight parade or the Lunar march, the names for the souls forever trapped by Tenebrous and Alter respectivly)
