Fund Dakota's 2016 AAU Jr. Olympic Experience -I am excited to share that for the 3rd year, Dakota has qualified to compete in the AAU Junior Olympics! At the end of the indoor season, Dakota started training for the Long Jump. She said she liked the event and wanted to continue improving her jum...
In the AAU 9-10 age group, Dakota ranks #2 in the North East region for Long Jump, and #4 in the 200 & 400 meter races.
KEEPING IT BALANCED
After AAU Regionals, I gave Dakota a break from track. I believe balance is important, after all summer had started and I didn’t want to tire her out from being in track all year. So following the track meet I whisked her off to sleep away camp with one her her besties! I was sad to lose her for a week but also a little jealous ‘cause I’m such an outdoors chick and so is she, which I love! Upon picking her up she said she had the best time ever!! I’ll write about the actual camp another time… But for her, cabin camping surrounded by nature was awesome. She found swimming in a lake with fish, listening to the woodpeckers knock holes in the trees and even managing the critters that may make the faint of heart's skin crawl to be of the most ultimate adventure. At closing ceremonies, I learned that she was always eager to learn something new and did her best when participating. She even learned how to shoot a BB gun! Dakota was awarded for her enthusiasm and sportsmanship and her bestie received an award for happy and enthusiastic attitude. Taking this break proved to be healthy and renewed Dakota's energy towards her Jr. Olympic quest! It was a great way to reward her for her hard work...(it sold well) while further supporting her growth as an gutsy girl!
ADDING A FIELD EVENT UPS HER GAME!
As a parent, I stand on the sidelines to show support. It makes my child feel empowered even while she’s listening and following the advice of her coach. I yell and scream while cheering her on but do not interfere with the coaches guidance. When my daughter is given instruction that I don’t understand, I ask questions for clarity and watch how it plays out. I trust her coaches. They have earned it. This is part of the recipe that gives Dakota confidence in achieving her goal. Long jump is new for her and she met the challenge with grace! By day’s end, Dakota jumped 12ft taking 2nd at the 2016 AAU Region 3 Junior Olympic Qualifier! She also medaled 4th in 200 and 400 meter races. Six members of her team medaled throughout the day’s events. See you at the 2016 AAU Junior Olympics!
Following the advice of her coach, Dakota nails 12ft in the long jump taking 2nd at the AAU Region 3 Junior Olympic Qualifier!
Training makes the athlete. As we enter the Summer Olympic season, let’s celebrate all who work hard to achieve their goal! Go team Elite!
