Important Announcements Regarding Otakon 2015
Greetings everyone!
With summer in full swing, and Otakon fast approaching we know everyone is wondering what the plan is. Well we’ve got some news for you, so hang on to your hats.
As some of you will recall, gatherings at Otakon have become a tricky business. Otakon is the largest anime convention on the east coast, with over 30,000 attendees, and while the Baltimore Convention Center is vast, with numbers like that it gets crowded pretty fast. Anyone who was at our gathering in 2013 will remember we had to relocate very soon after starting.
Last year we were fortunate enough to host our gathering as a workshop, granting us a designated location and time slot. Now, this wasn’t a perfect solution. Due to size constraints not everyone who wanted to participate was able to get into the room, and many people were left outside waiting.
Traditional “guerilla” gatherings and sanctioned workshops both have pros and cons, and as DTP and the convention dance community grows and evolves it’s necessary to experiment and try different things to best achieve our goals of dancing and having fun with all of you.
This year, Otakon has not selected the DTP gathering as a workshop, meaning we will not have a designated location or time slot, but that has never stopped us in the past and it certainly won’t this year. We will still be hosting our fifth annual dance gathering at Otakon, on Saturday 7/25 beginning at 7:30pm. Where? We aren’t sure yet, and we’ll need YOUR help, our amazing friends and Diamonds.
We will announce a location on Thursday, July 23rd as early as possible, and we hope that all of you will help spread the word with #DTPGathering. HOWEVER, given how large DTP and our extended family has grown, there’s a good chance we will have to move. We plan to have several backup locations lined up, and again we ask for the help of our friends and Diamonds to spread the word about any location changes with #DTPGathering.
Our community has grown large and strong, and we are all in this together. So long as we’re a team, DTP members, friends of DTP, and our sparkling DTP Diamonds, nothing can stop! #DTPfighting!
