and dw i was in the exact same boat (haha that was unintentional) as you but i can give you some tips on what i learned??
i read up some guides on tdn and jn but what really helped me was watching a video of someone playing it
don't be afraid to hold down the up/forward key
draw all the mines to the opposite side that the dubloon is on (well duh)
after playing for a while you learn the best ways to "herd" all the mines into the center. also if you just go in circles aroudn the group of mines they tend to naturally form a cluster. (i'd try not to make any of them collide with one another though, bc then more mines will form and they have a chance of appearing /right/ in front of you, which you can't do anything about)
when a whirlpool appears, quickly turn your boat to the other direction hold down the up arrow for your life srsly they are so scary but they will clear all the mines which can be good and bad
be patient!! don't run around wildly bc that's where you make mistakes and get a little too close. keep your mind cool and take the time to draw those mine away so you can get to the coin safely
if there's 1 or 2 mines that are closest to the dubloon, focus on getting those away. get fairly close to them then move kinda parallel to the edge of the mine "cluster"
not quite sure how to word that, but watching a video REALLY helped me so if you're shooting for the avatar you should try it! i honestly thought i'd never get it, i'm still surprised that i did in just a few days of practice. i bet you could do it too!!
