Dubnium is named after Dubna, Russia, location of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). Before its name was settled in 1993, the two labs that claimed to have synthesized it first, JINR and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, named it bohrium (later used for another element) and hahnium respectively.
