Muzz Fentona of Fentona Music Umbrella - Last of the Cartoon Gangsters (EP) Audio Review
22/12/25
Rolls in track 1 'Bad Luck and Trouble on My Mind' with a razor sharp riff as good as any of the late Andy Gill's of Gang of Four plus, a dub reggae style bass line with a 4/4 drum beat constructed around a Jamaican "Lee Scratch Perry" style vocal delivery. There's also an anarcho punk feel to this opener and I'm enjoying every second of it; lyrics are a stab at claustrophobia and impatience, not an easy combination, but makes for great listening. First, and foremost with this style of music you have to be great just to nail the sheer altitude, and menace leaving a somewhat satisfied state of assurance. Track 2 'Burning (King Effers in Dub) Remix' displaying the closest thing you'll hear to Killing Joke's 'Change' this side of the 2020's. Delayed guitar and repetitive Jah Wobble style bass patterns roll through a jungle of brilliantly panned out sound. I'm loving the vocal here even more than on the first track full of destruction, and chaos. It's like as if the most reggae influenced song of The Clash made its way to Sheffield in a Honda S660, and barrel rolled all over a warehouse full of dub reggae raver's, mixed with head banging punks, thus exploding into a massive fire ball on impact. Truly amazing stuff, and I hope this gets the recognition it actually deserves. Track 3 'The Last of the Cartoon Gangsters (Instrumental)' is a frantic and well assembled reggae, ska, and post punk concoction echoing The Beat, The Skints, Dreadzone, Dub Pistols, and if that list doesn't tickle your titties The Ruts. Honestly this EP has absolutely blown me away, and for every digital purchase made, all profits will go toward Myeloma UK Research so buy this EPIC montage of absolute stonkers. Anyone with a good ear for music will truly appreciate this.
