Gene Chandler, whose actual name is Eugene Dixon, was warming up with his group, the Dukays, by singing "Do do do do", and Dixon would sometimes use "Earl" instead of "do", referencing another member in the group, Earl Edwards. Dixon, with Edwards and mentor Bernice Williams, worked on the song that became "The Duke of Earl". The decision was made to release with Dixon as a solo artist, taking the name Gene Chandler to begin this next chapter.
