Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, normalmente considerados como uno de los grupos iniciadores del rap / hip-hop, el denominado "old school", para mí un estupendo grupo electro funk de principios de los ochenta. Otros que le gustaban mucho a Paul Weller.
A pesar de la estupenda "White Lines", creo que "The Message" fue su gran canción, lanzada como single por Sugar Hill Records el 1 de julio de 1982 y más tarde en el álbum de estudio debut del grupo. Una gran combinación de estilos: electro, rap, disco, funk, dub, con letra de comentario social acerca de la difícil vida en el guetto, una de las primeras canciones del rap con una letra así. La canción comenzó a ser escrita en 1980 por Duke Bootee y Melle Mel, en respuesta a la huelga de transporte público en Nueva York en 1980, que se menciona en la letra.
Como curiosidad, los irlandeses Stiff Little Fingers versionaron "The Message" en su LP de 1997, "Tinderbox".
