Death of James Douglas, 2nd Duke of Queensberry
On July 6, 1711, James Douglas, 2nd Duke of Queensberry, one of the most influential Scottish statesmen of his era, died at the age of 48. As Lord High Commissioner to the Parliament of Scotland, he played a central role in shaping one of the most controversial political transformations in British history.
Queensberry is best remembered for helping negotiate the 1707 Treaty of Union, which united the Kingdoms of Scotland and England into Great Britain. Though highly divisive at the time, the agreement reshaped the future of the British Isles and secured his legacy as a key architect of union and statecraft during a turbulent political age.
