Autumn always makes me nostalgic. A month and a year ago, I decided to give *that* show on Netflix another try. A year ago, I was ears deep in some of the most incredible fics I’ve ever read on AO3. Among them were AUs and case fics about a posh boy who rides English, dressage even, on a black Friesian, or in one case, said posh boy was the Friesian... my long dormant artistic senses began to tingle.

I used to draw horses incessantly as a child. I’m talking reams upon reams of copy paper devoted to my love of all things equine. And I read up on all things horse too. I practically memorized my copy of Judith Draper’s Horse Breeds of the World. But there’s truth in the statement that riding, especially the gleaming horses with their manes and tails braided in the dressage ring, is a sport for society’s upper crusts...

Still, one can dream and draw, can especially dream and draw and read about beautiful horses ridden by beautiful consulting detectives and his ilk. This fandom has given me so much this past year, not just equine-related, but I’d like to give a shout out to a few horse-related fics that were on my mind whilst drawing this.

@7-percent‘s Musgrave Blaze is possibly the fic that started it all. Not only was this the first fic in the “7-percent-verse” that I read (it’s not the first one folks, so if you plan to start, start at the beginning and get ready to have the world shift under your feet), the story’s respect of past trauma reframed a lot of those cliched “overcoming one’s fear of riding” stories that I think kind of define the “genre,” if you will. Sherlock and Pirate will always have a bit of my heart.

I don’t think one can talk about horse-related sherlock fanfic without bringing up @khorazir‘s The Horse and his Doctor? I will admit to being a bit skeptical at first (is this story really going where I think it is?), but I was quickly enamored (it really is going there! and it’s incredible!!!). The gorgeous artwork certainly didn’t detract. (can we talk about the illustration at the end of this chapter?) Khorazir really does justice to luscious Friesian curls in a way which I have clearly opted out of...

And finally I can’t post this without talking about one of my current favorite WIP obsessions. We don’t really see much of Sherlock in his jodhpurs (or breeches) and hunt coat, but I’m definitely not complaining about the getups of equestrian!lock and cowboy John featured in @dulcimergecko​‘s absolutely brilliant The Devils’ Blaze. I just can’t wait to see what John’s reaction to Sherlock in those tight white pants will be when we (hopefully) get there.

Phew. Long post. These are just a few that I’ve read and loved. I’m sure there must be more. Please send more horse related fic recs my way if you have them!

Hello, I'm trying to remember the name/author of a short fic that explains how Mycroft and Sherlock use insults and/or bickering to communicate in a secret/coded language. They developed the code in their childhood. Their parents commented on how their first attempt was a failure, which is why the Holmes brothers switched to insults as a form of code. Hello! I checked your 'amputation' tag first, but I didn't see the specific information I needed: In the event of a traumatic, partial amputation of an arm at a shoulder joint, would it be possible to reattach the arm? (the scenario I'm imagining is basically the arm getting ripped out of the shoulder socket, accompanying joint/muscle/ligament damage, etc.). How many months of surgery and rehab would the patient (a young, fit man) be looking at? Thank you for your time. Best, DG

Hey there! This is gonna be one of those case-by-case dealies, where sometimes this might be possible. There’s definitely precedent: this girl in Northumberland got her arm reattached after a bad run-in with a high-speed train, and this kid got his arm reattached after a run-in with a pastamaker.

But the #1 thing that makes me think this isn’t un-doable is this guy’s arm getting reattached after a croc decided to rip his arm off. (WARNING: GRAPHIC PHOTOS).

The word that makes me say this is ripping. Replantation works best for wounds that are essentially already traditional amputations -- smooth ends, for example.. Basically, the surgically ideal replantation candidate had a run-in with a circular saw. (Not a chansaw; chansaws do too much ripping in their motion.)

That said, it’s going to depend on the exact injuries. The number one concern is keeping this character from bleeding to death. The brachial artery is a very, very heavy bleeder when it’s severed (read: ripped apart).

Even if he clears that hurdle, he has to have possession of the rest of the arm (duh), and then he’s going to need a lot of surgeries to get things back where they should be. Priority one is getting the vasculature hooked back up, and priority 2 is the nerves.

Sometimes these procedures  work. Sometimes they don’t. There could be initial success with the limb but it could fail to improve significantly, or there could be not enough blood flow further down the limb, and they may have to amputate the reattached arm.

Replantation is a BIG DEAL. This is one of those “it takes a village to heal a patient” things. It’s going to take multiple surgeries to get things sorted. Plus, remember that this arm had a lot of force applied to it, and there are likely a number of fractures that need to be managed (surgically). The nerves need time to heal, the arm needs time to heal...

You’re looking at months of rehabilitation, and even then they may only get partial function back, is what I’m trying to say, and that’s if they’re a replantation candidate to begin with. This process might take 6-8 months, it might take a year. It depends on how rocky the road to recovery is.

One other thought. For functionality purposes I’d suggest this happen to the character’s non-dominant hand, though that’s up to you with the level of challenge you want to give your character.

Maybe a sort of body-wide magic amnesia thing, where it's so strong that their body has regressed as well as their mind, and you reverse it using cognitive recalibration?

I’m not sure it would work on three of them, and not work on the other one, which is what I need to happen... Hmm.

Growth hormones but with dark or antimatter. Just say it was the Tesseract's fault. Or one of the other Infinity Stones. The Time one in specific, I know, has the ability to de-age and age. It's orange, for reference sake. Wikipedia: Infinity Gems.

Ahhh, this is so nice! I’m flailing over here! Thank you for that!! I’m sorry for all the lack of sleep. Know that at least an equal amont of not-sleep went into the writing, if that helps at all, haha!
