OH DO HOLY WINE AND I HAVE FEELINGS ABOUT THIS IMAGE
and we will be posting about it in a non-shouty way tomorrow
BUT FOR TODAY YOU GET THE SHOUTING, PAN! Sherlock's coat billowing out in the wind makes ME feel cold. The crooked "to let" sign in the window is Edward Hopper-level desolate and lonely. The tiny house crunched between its two neighbors borrows the cramped rooms Sherlock looks at with such bleak revulsion.
It's … just perfect. Thank you, you brilliant Pan.

Nearing the entrance of the Carabinieri headquarters in Piazza Sant'Ignazio, John casts an eye over at the café on the corner. Is it possible that only three weeks have passed since they’d had a coffee there, received the team’s secret address and begun the madness of this case? Three weeks they should have spent in the south of Italy, enjoying a holiday together.
Someone tagged me a while back (sorry, I lost the post and searching tumblr is a nightmare). The challenge was to pick my five favorite stories I've written. I can't. While I love some of my stories more than others, I'm continually revising my preferences.
But at the end of the year I always look back over what I've done and draw some lessons. This year, the fic that taught me the most was The Secret of Agra.
So here are five personal lessons I learned from that one story, along with five takeaway lessons for anyone who feels stuck on a story. (Yes, I see you.)
One: I can only write things I enjoy writing. Not necessarily the same as what other people will enjoy reading.
This seems self-evident, but it's always worth asking myself, do I really want to write this? Why do I want to write it? Is there something else I need to write more, before I write this?
There were (literally) a hundred stories I needed to write before I was ready to write The Secret of Agra. If I hadn't felt drawn by this weird idea, it would still be sitting in the wip pile.
We do this for ourselves, right? Stop thinking you have to please everybody.
Takeaway: If you love an idea, you should write it. If you don't, it will haunt you.
Two: It's worth waiting to get a story right. More time does not make a story worse, it shows me what it's worth to me.
I started writing this story in 2020. All I had at the beginning was Sherlock in a weird headspace, thinking he was back from his Reichenbach Adventure and wondering why he was sitting alone in 221B, no John, a pile of unfamiliar books, and phone calls from a strange woman.
There was a lot of inertia in that idea, and it predictably went nowhere. It became the story always at the bottom of the WIP pile, a dog-eared thing that I pulled out every now and then, scratching out a few parts, adding some parts, and then wandering off after some more promising idea.
But I liked what I'd written, and kept poking it, and it gathered more ideas, and at the end of 2024, I was ready to write the last chapter.
Five years is a long time. In the end I finished it because it wouldn't leave me alone and I was too stubborn to give it up.
Takeaway: Be patient. There are no deadlines. Never throw any story away. Let it haunt you.
Three: My best stories start with a character, mood/aura, not with a problem, a conflict, or a cool plot idea.
This surprises me because I always think it's the idea, the scenario and the plot that draw me. But many stories I've most enjoyed writing begin with a character and a mood:
Solstice begins with Sherlock looking at his phone and having the melancholy realisation that it's been a year since he talked to John. I imagined a slow reunion, but no idea how that would happen. A case? A crisis? None of that, as it happens.
The Losing Side begins with a very angry Watson who kisses Sherlock before refusing to watch him fall. He does fall, but how would that kiss change him, how would he return differently to that angry John? I had feelings about that before I had a plot.
Accidental Magic begins with a dream I had: an old house filled with books, a dead man, his widow. The dream left me with an eerie feeling and a burning desire for John and Sherlock to search through all those books. (And there would have to be ciphers.)
The Secret of Agra was like this, too. It gave me a gut feeling, and that was why I kept coming back to this: Sherlock, wondering where John was, why everything seemed so strange.
Takeaway: If an "idea" is going nowhere, look for an aura, consider a character's mood. Follow that.
Four: Point of View is the most important decision I make when writing a story.
I used to just start writing, going with a gut feeling about whose story it was. I kept it limited, through a character's eyes.
The Agra story started with Sherlock, sitting in his flat in that mood. Visitors, phone calls, nothing moved it forward. Even when I finally got him out the door, it still felt stuck.
Two additional POVs got the story unstuck. John's POV answered questions about where Sherlock was and what John was doing about it. It became an Orpheus story. Once John was in Agra, adding Greg's POV grounded the story in reality and brought them home.
I don't like adding other character POV's just for something to do, but this is an exercise that has worked for me, more than once. Especially with a long story, one POV can be limited and boring.
Takeaway: Try writing a stuck story from another character's POV. Even if you don't use it, this can very often show you what a story is missing.
Five: In the end, I finished The Secret of Agra because I was writing it for myself.
The best job, somebody said, is the one you'd do for free, but you do so well that somebody pays you to do it.
I am well-paid by my readers, who give me kudos and lovely comments. But that's not something they owe me.
And I've done a lot of writing that never had an audience. After five years, I'd decided that Secret of Agra had to be written, if only for myself. I gave up wondering if anyone would read it and just did it. For me, the story had become the Big Reichenbach Return Story that fixed Everything. Many people have written that story, but this was mine.
The Secret Agra is probably not my best or favorite story, but I am so grateful for the readers who read, commented, and made it more than a personal journey for me.
Takeaway: Write it for yourself. That story you imagine? No one else is going to write it for you.
These are all fairly obvious, but still warrant saying.
I'll just add one more: Ask someone to read what you've written.
Even if your story is a mess and you're embarrassed to show it to anyone. That reader might not kick you in the pants, maybe won't even say more than a few words, but you will immediately be seeing your whole weirdly personal project through an outsider's eyes and you will begin to see how to make it better. You will imagine people reading it and not walking away.
In your own head, there is an echo chamber that keeps you from moving ahead.
💕 Many thanks to @friday411 who read a few chapters and gave me a needed kick in the pants to finish The Secret of Agra! 💕
PS Writers, I am interested in what story of yours taught you some lessons. Please share, if you can!
I can relate to so much here. Writing is a joy, one that I've loved/needed since I was a child and learned how words work. Calais, your primary point (or at least what I took away as most significant) is writing for oneself. I can write to spec, and it can be fun, but it is never as gratifying as when I'm composing for myself. I share (thank you AO3!), because I know (from my personal experience) that there is likely someone else out there who might enjoy the idea and characterizations that inspired me. Writing is magic.
@avathffs asked: Has any new madness of note gone on the last few years?
If you don’t mind, I’ll answer here.
I left Tumblr in 2017, when Sherlock fandom was full of pain and broken dreams, and came back just a month ago.
Here’s what I’ve noticed in 2023:
Johnlock isn’t wild anymore. It became more mature(?).
There are still a lot of new artworks, gifs, and fanfiction. Btw, highly recommend @meetinginsamarra to look for your ideal Johnlock fanfic.
The fandom wounds got in 2017 haven’t healed yet. I’d say some fans are still mad while others are sad. That’s why most of creative stuff is focused on Series 1-3 + TAB. Series 4 is often ignored.
There are two broad opinions towards Johnlock:
1) S4 shows real events, relationships between Sherlock and John are deteriorated, and the ending is a clear queerbating;
2) S4 doesn’t show real events (an unreliable storyteller), we don’t know the real state of Sherlock and John relationships, and the ending looks suspicious.
There is a lot of great meta written for the past six year! I’m still in the process of reading it. I’ll make up a list of my favorite meta and share it in the nearest time.
When you say Johnlock isn't wild anymore, does that mean no more Tunalock type things hahaha I remember when that filled my dash, truly a wild time.
I will definitely check @meetinginsamarra out and search out other active users - my feed is dead.
I understand people are still hurt. As ridiculous as it sounds, my own wounds after s4 have been so sore I had to step away almost immediately after the last episode ended. Be part of history LOL. Lord...
... but saying that, I've now read the extended mind palace metas (mostly from @loudest-subtext-in-tv) with less hurt emotions and I can see the fuckery of s4 and I am willing to give watching it a go again with that view. I actually just finished watching s1e1 for the first time in years and honestly I still get the same emotions I used to have. Johnlock is truly a love through the ages for me. But if that EMP train of thought is correct then they've left it far too long. S5 should have been announced directly after and aired close to s4 before perhaps losing momentum/memory with the more casual watchers and to perhaps calm the hurt/baited watchers. Such an odd note to leave it on, to never expose that the entire seasons was EMP? Ahhh I'm going to twist myself in circles.
Would love to get stuck in with all the metas I have missed! And get stuck in with writing fic again (and rp if that community is still active somewhere after the demise of Omegle). I've noticed I consume the internet more than I create the internet these days, if that makes sense. I miss creating and I miss the inspiration I got from the show and the community.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful response, I really appreciate it! =)
I'm so glad old fans rejoins Sherlock fandom. It means this community never dies.❤
Hahaha I haven’t seen any Otter/Hedgehog arts recently! I’m not talking about Tunalock...
Unfortunately, there are a lot of great blogs dedicated to BBC Sherlock / Johnlock that aren’t active anymore. So painful!
(My dash is alive thanks to @a-victorian-girl who is extremely active on Tumblr.)
Oh, I feel you! Tbh, now my wounds are healing because of meta. I believe in meta so much that I'm ready to rewatch S4 during my winter holidays!
I’m in love with EMP theories! Even if they’re wrong (to prove it we need S5, yes, Mofftiss?), they’re beautiful on its own. My imagination runs wild every time I read EMP theories. (Btw, I love meta posts by @garkgatiss. Highly recommend!)
I suppose Mofftiss want to repeat history. ACD Sherlock’s fans waited for 8 years to bring back Holmes. Instead of killing the main character, Mofftiss have "killed" the whole show. (It’s just my theory.) After 2025 we'll see.
I miss creating and I miss the inspiration I got from the show and the community. SAME! But I don’t like writing things, I prefer making edits in Photoshop. :D
Thank you so much for taggin' me, @pressurepoint221!! 🫂
I landed here at the beginning of this year (2023), thanks to Pinterest (where I saw thousands of screenshots of Sherlock meta from Tumblr, lol)
Idk how it was here in 2017, but I've been told a lot about that time. So sad.... Unfortunately there are still haters of that past fandom, but there are still many talented people (writers, retouchers, illustrators) who continue posting beautiful fanarts and fanfics about Sherlock. We even have Sabri (@sabsi221b), who is now recording Sherlock podfics!! 🩷
Sherlock fandom is far from disappearing or dying.
I get it that a smaller fandom looks like one heading toward extinction. But it isn't. I'm thrilled with all the activity and creativity in this community (the Johnlock corner of the Sherlock fandom) and can honestly not keep up.
Every chapter of the fics I post on AO3 contains a fic rec or two, a habit I got from the inimitable @quesarasara, and I reblog like a madwoman on tumblr.
I'd also suggest following @helloliriels who puts out a fandom newsletter on tumblr; @cupidford @inevitably-johnlocked @my-johnlockficrecs @7-percent @calaisreno @discordantwords @thegildedbee @blogstandbygo who are all generous fic reccers
I second @totallysilvergirl's emphatic cri de coeur :-)
Post-2017 there have been amazing fics (and plucky commenters and kudosers), and stunning artwork, and vids full of ideas, and, here at tumblr, a dandy set of humorous, and brilliant, and clever posters and rebloggers -- which all means that the bbc sherlock fan community still has a beating heart.
but it is smaller and very different from the magnificent dynamics that existed when the show was a still-alive series. that it is smaller, tragically, isn't even because there was a normal kind of attrition -- the wrenching horrific mess of 2017 meant that so many people just slammed the door shut, in horror at the progresson of the series, and/or horror at the internal harshness that roiled the community. I am still haunted by beautiful works-in-progress fics that were silenced . . . not because of why wips often remain wips (quite understandably so) but because their authors were so sick at heart by s4 they just couldn't bring themselves to keep going with them.
I still can't re-watch the series, even though I've remained active in the fandom.
emp would be wonderful, and I love that it exists as an insightfully-analyzed and perfectly reasonable universe (whether for real or alternatively), but I'm afraid my opinion of mofftiss is that they got mean after 2015 -- I think they were incredibly jealous of how BC and MF became such huge stars, and how their on-screen chemistry came to overwhelm interest in the authors of the episodes (and I suspect the fact that Gatiss was also actually in the show made experiencing what happened even more anger-inducing). [Plus I don't think they could handle the fandom being as smart as it was, but that's another story.] It was okay when they could explain to themselves that BC and MF's high profile was down to them, and that they were in control of it -- but after 2014, it was a different game in that regard.
I think that's one of the reasons s4 is as it is -- both to turn the spotlight back on themselves, but to also de-emphasize BC and MF, hence the Eurus plot and the continued "presence" of Mary and the ridiculous last episode, especially. So, I'm not sanguine there was a logic to s4 other than pique and getting their own back, abetted by a hermetically sealed writing environment that meant there was no push-back regarding quality of the narrative.
(I also think they tried to shoot AA and SB into the stratosphere like BC and MF had done, to show that it was their god-like powers of authorship that allowed that kind of lightning to strike, and, again, to de-emphasize what BC and MF had created through their acting.)
I say all of this, because I've tried for several years now to guess what may happen next, both as a fan of the show, but also as a fan of the fandom. I don't think we'll get a s5 -- I think s4 was meant to put paid to that idea. But I do think we'll get a movie at some point, one that likely won't even reference much, if at all, the series, but will have the series as its motor. If that's true, I think there could be another swell of interest that could enlarge the fandom, and could, perhaps, after all the time that's passed, entice some of those who left to return. It would be a fascinating phase if so.
But even if none of that transpires, there are really wonderful riches in today's fandom -- not just in a compensatory sense, but in a continually-renewing powerful sense -- and astonishing creativity and, I think, a sense of the importance of caring for each other on the part of many, because of 2017 and its aftermath.
It is a lovely fandom. xoxoxox
And, there are new people who find their way here, because of their own finding of the series in their own time. And that is exciting also!
This fandom will not die. There are too many hard headed, tender hearted people who need a series 5. A series that makes sense for us, that gives our beloved characters the respect they deserved. We want Sherlock and John to have a life together, to solve crimes, or save lives, or chase tornados. We need them to push themselves to be better, to care for Mrs Hudson and the homeless, for Lestrade and Molly. We need to know that our boys are tender with each other, that they have something they care for together, be it Rosie/Archie/the bees.
We want them in modern times, or time traveling, or being penguins in love, or tunas —or otters and hedgehogs. We want these things, we need them and our fandom has not died because we as a group have matured, we fight less, we welcome new ideas and talents and we are so resolute in giving Holmes and Watson we we envision for them, that we are not waiting for Series 5 any more. We don’t have to, because We Are Season 5.
New members please thank all of the above! They are not all of but some of the strongest pillars of our fandom. There are many, many more. We are alive, our fandom hearts beat strong.
Been around for a while: @totallysilvergirl , @discordantwords , @elwinglyre , @chriscalledmesweetie, @cumbercurlygirl , @calaisreno , @7-percent , @onesmallfamily , @khorazir , @the-pen-pot @inevitably-johnlocked , @bluebellofbakerstreet , @ceruleanmindpalace , @kitten-kin , @barachiki , @petite-madame , @peanitbear ,
That is just a short list. I know I’m missing many more of the great!!
And it's not just the makers - writers, podficcers, artists - who are keeping it alive. There is a very strong readership in the fandom. Every story I post finds new readers, and there still exists a core of readers who have been here for years and encourage those of us who write with wonderful comments 💕 Many of these folks are not on tumblr, so from this perspective, they may be unseen, but you can find them on Ao3, reading and commenting and leaving kudos, always happy to discover a new story, a new author, and other enthusiastic readers. They converse with one another in the comments section.
Some of these readers are active writers in other fandoms. A few even crossover and write an occasional Sherlock story (looking at you, @copperplatebeech). We have seen many Good Omens crossovers, and other fandoms. Our fandom is looked to as a source of good writing, good fanfic.
Many of us also follow the Sherlock & Co podcast and have seen new people joining and writing on Ao3. It's a hopeful sign, that we are not tired of johnlock, just ready to imagine new versions of it. That is better than the Series 5 we never got.
I am a newbie myself, having joined post-S4, and here I am, eight years later, still writing, reading, and reblogging. This is not a dying fandom. ❤️
I can't possibly remember everyone to thank, but I'll mention @totallysilvergirl @keirgreeneyes @meetinginsamarra @helloliriels @discordantwords @redmondcollege @raina-at @lisbeth-kk @ghostofnuggetspast @lhrinchelsea @mydogwatson @7-percent who are cheerleaders and reccers and lovely people who drew me over to tumblr in 2020. Thankyou!
Agree with this so much! Being quite the newbie myself, I can’t really say anything about the past, but my TL is full of Sherlock related stuff and it doesn’t seem to diminish. Also, AO3 is a constant reminder that new authors and fics are created regularly, as is amazing fanart. Earlier this month I spent one week in London with friends from around the world - all of which I had gotten acquainted with through this fandom. In my opinion, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are far too important to discard like yesterday’s news. They are wholly integrated into my daily life and will remain so indefinitely.
Tagging some of my loyal fandom friends to thank them for their constant support and generosity, starting with the one who tagged me @calaisreno
@totallysilvergirl @keirgreeneyes @holmesianlove @phoenix27884 @221beloved @a-victorian-girl @raina-at @meetinginsamarra @inevitably-johnlocked @stellacartography @redmondcollege @helloliriels @cumbercurlygirl @khorazir @thegildedbee to name a few - some are not on Tumblr
I'm rereading the Sherlock Holmes books and thinking: this fandom has existed for over 100 years.
I don't know a single normal person in this fandom, either you're the one who analyzes every single millisecond of a TV show to make theories, or you're the one who got into this queer pyramid scheme and is now obsessed, or you're writing fanfics so detailed and intriguing that they could be turned into movie scripts.
"oh okay, that's just nowadays"
And then I find out that Arthur Conan Doyle had to resurrect Sherlock because people went out in the streets in mourning when he died and sent him threatening letters.
The Sherlock fandom is full of chaotic, neurodivergent, depressed people and I love every single one of them❤
