📍 Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina 🗓 Date: April 27, 2025 🐾 Media: Image 🌿 Species: Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) 📝 Notes: Medium-sized songbird commonly found in dense shrubs, thickets, forest edges, and overgrown habitats. Slate-gray plumage with a darker cap and a subtle rusty patch under the tail, usually hidden unless the bird is active or agitated.
Known for its varied vocalizations, including mimicry of other bird calls and a distinctive “cat-like” mewing sound. Often stays hidden in dense vegetation, making it more often heard than seen.
