Historians say IRL Mary Stuart was groomed to be queen of France and expected (thanks to Henri II) to unite England and Scotland. She was driven to be a ruler, it was what she expected from life— that she would be married, have children, and be queen. So TV!Mary might, in homage, be very focused on the ‘king’-ness of it all, while Bash is fixated on the idea of getting married to her.
Which he wasn’t all excited about at first. I can’t remember the episode, and I’m not doing a rewatch for love or money at this point, but there was a scene where Bash was telling Mary to back the hell up because if she was going to marry him rather than Francis and he was going to have to take (essentially) the Crown Matrimonial he would really have appreciated being consulted about it before Francis kicked his ass for stealing his girl.
Because, you know, loyal. Also, being king is not as much fun as being a favored bastard.
So yeah, I vote ‘confused’.
That was 1x09, For King and Country, I believe. It would have been nice if there had been more follow up. In the next scene Bash and Mary are meeting Henry in the cellar about her plan. I would have liked to hear Mary's pitch to get Bash to go along though I guess it's not that complex. Brother alive + Mary as wife = all cool.
Why would Bash have to take the Crown Matrimonial? There's no way it would be granted, right? Is King Consort not enough? Is it necessary for the claim on England?
