Banned From The Duncan Showroom!
On March 13th, 2017, we played a show with our pals The Helletones and BUZZARD at a place in Duncan, B.C. called The Duncan Showroom.
It is a venue run by a pair of 800 year old out-of-touch hippies, one of which goes by the name of “Longevity John”.
We were the first band to play, and about halfway through our second song, I noticed some weird effects being piped in over our performance. Trailing off delay, excruciating reverb... very distracting nonetheless. We did not sound like ourselves, and it was not because of anything WE were doing.
This was also not an isolated incident. This trend would also continue throughout The Helletones set, as well as Buzzard’s.
Now, The Showroom has a habit of filming and live-streaming all of the bands who play at their venue, and after viewing our set online, decided that the final product which was posted was not represented of what we actually sound like, due to the Showroom’s sound man taking it upon himself to lay his own effects into our music.
After contacting them via e-mail, and politely asking them to take it down, and politely asking just what had happened, the sound man very rudely demanded to know why we wanted it deleted; adding that unless I supplied a good enough reason, he would not do so (which is illegal).
After explaining to him my reasoning, he then replied IN ALL CAPITALS, that the reason why he did it was because:
I asked him if that was also the reason why he did it to The Helletones (who definitely DON’T suck), as well as Buzzard (who also definitely do not suck), and all he could offer me was incoherent hippie ramblings about “respect for elders”, and “the artistic standards of the Duncan Showroom”.
It was only after I threatened him with legal action did he IMMEDIATELY take it down, but not after telling us that our band was BANNED from ever playing there again. (OH NO! LOL. We’ll just have to find the courage to continue on with our lives.) God forbid we be in charge of our own art, and decide where and where it does not belong.
It would seem to me that if you ran a live music venue (particularly one that is in several thousand dollars in debt), you’d do a little research on the types of acts and artists you have play there. If you believe a band “sucks” and is “too loud”, you do not start fucking with them in the middle of their set. If you dislike a band, or feel somebody is too loud... you let them finish..... and then you don’t have them back. Plain and simple. This is not an artistic collaboration. Your job is to make us sound how we ask you to make us sound. You don’t try to make a tight, mean, loud rock and roll band sound like they’re playing in a wind tunnel, or inside Brian Wilson’s glass bathroom.
For any bands thinking of going to Duncan, B.C. and playing at the horrible hippie commune known as the Duncan Showroom... DON’T.
Apparently, this is kind of what they do regularly, as we are not the first band to complain about this problem, nor about the venue’s management and attitude in general.
Life is short. Play loud. And stay the fuck away from hippies. The 60s are over.
