hi yall, not fun fact, rabies is 100% fatal once you show symptoms! so if you get bit by a rabid animal and don’t get treatment … once you start showing symptoms, you’re already dead.

rabies also doesn’t just look like angry snarling animals. they can be very friendly, or be really disoriented, stuff like that. not all rabid animals are the aggressive frothing at the mouth kind shown in media!

note, this post is inspired by one i saw, but didn’t want to reblog because the videos of the animals in it were in pain, and idk if they might like really upset someone. link to post that describes more in detail of what i’m talking about here

Hi!!!

I was wondering if you have any body condition score charts on hand for snakes and lizards? Particularly: ball pythons, leopard geckos and (juvenile) bearded dragons. Also how to check for dehydration? I've noticed that I'm not very good at spotting these things on reptiles and am a bit worried that I might end up missing a problem.

These are my favorites from groups I'm in, but I don't know of a bearded dragon one unfortunately. They've been shared so much in groups I'm in I honestly have no idea who originally make them so I do apologize to the creators for lack of credit.

Dehydration in reptiles manifests as wrinkly skin that wont sit smoothly, sunken eyes, thick and stringy saliva, and shedding issues. Snakes that don't shed in one piece are poorly hydrated, and lizards missing toes or that have dry, stuck patches of shed are poorly hydrated. Snakes should not have patches of shed on them. And lizards do shed in pieces but it should not be super dry. Dehydrated snakes may also have dented eye caps and for ball pythons I've noticed that they lack an iridescent shine that the healthy ones have.

This is a very dehydrated snake.

And a leopard gecko with stuck shed. notice how it's really flat to the head and looks like you'd have to basically scrape it off to remove it.

Compare to a healthy shed that peels right off, even if it is in pieces.

I feel like sunken eyes are easier to see in person but this is a really sick beardie with obviously sunken eyes

S.I.P., Nimbus

I had this feisty little guy for just under 3 years, meaning he was over 3 years old at his time of passing. He’d always been in good health, except for his vision problems that started at a young age that never went away. Unfortunately, it was his bad eyes that really started causing him problems in the past two months and ultimately led to his passing. One of his eyes got infected and was lost, and ever since then, no matter how pristine I kept the water, that area kept getting infected again and again. The stress of it (plus his age) left him open to other health problems, I suspect, since I started to see signs of other illnesses popping up as well.

I will miss this little guy. He was actually my first crowntail. Before him, I never really cared for crowntails but Nimbus made me see them in a new light. I would definitely consider getting another, especially since he was my longest-lived domestic betta. He was a good, angry boy.

Now I only have wild bettas (albimarginata, smaragdina guitar, and siamorientalis). With the pandemic still being the way it is, plus a few personal things coming up in my near future, I won’t be getting more fish any time soon. But once everything’s calmed down, I definitely plan to, especially since I may start up a breeding project or two. We’ll see what the future holds.

Popeye? Gotta be. But it's only one side? I thought it was both eyes? I think she got spooked by something and was injured by one of the rocks ;-; any advice is welcome !

Our insurance company (because they’re butts) have said now that they’re not gonna cover any more of the costs we’ve incurred - or are due to incur.
