Yo, I really like the paintwork on your IW guys. Do you have any advice for a amateur painter? I have a few painted squads of 30k World Eaters and a Blight Drone I painted but I'm scared to paint anything but my cheapass cultists. I got a primed Leman Russ sitting around waiting to be chaos-ed
I’ve got some tips.
The first is to be patient. I’ve been playing and painting 40k for like ten years now and I’m still an average painter. It takes a lot of time and effort to get good at this, and expecting stellar results off the bat is a good way to get disappointed/burned out quickly.
Thin your paints. I know this is a meme at this point, but it’s good advice. Thinned paint requires multiple coats for full coverage, but it goes on smooth, leaves no obvious brush marks, and preserves detail better than a single thick one.
Washes and drybrushing are your friend. Seriously, learn to use these two techniques. They will save your ass and produce tabletop ready results in a good timeframe. The washes will shade a basecoat then a drybrush will add an instant highlight without having to faff around with layering and edge highlights.
That being said, don’t use drybrushing as a crutch to not learn basic brush control. It’s scary to risk ruining your expensive models, but without pushing yourself you’ll never get better.
Those are the first few things that pop into my head. Don’t be afraid and have fun. It’s a hobby and as long as you’re happy with what you produce that’s good enough.
Final closing note: Check out Warhammer TV tip of the day on youtube if you haven’t already. Duncan and Peachy are good instructors and there’s loads of good video tutorials on there.
