Dural v Raia
A yelp echoed out into the night, with Dural snapping his mandibles to cut it off. His mother stood towering above him, a wooden staff pressed into his chest. The pressure of it was irritating, but not painful. Had it been an energy sword, though, Dural probably would be dead. That's the silent message he got once he lifted his head up and looked into Raia's stern eyes.
Just out of reach was his own staff, left on the ground after Raia forced it from his hands with ease. He thought having her led the training session instead of his usual mentor would make these easier. He was poorly mistaken. She would not be going easy on him just because he was her son. And she was not an easy opponent just because she was a woman. No... it was entirely because she was a mother who had to defend her home and children that made her so terrifying. The glory of victory was a pitiful motivation in the face of that.
Not only that, but she wanted her son to become the best warrior he could be. She never wanted a messenger to arrive at the keep, delivering the news of his death. Death in battle was an acceptable fate in Sangheili culture - but to a Sangheili mother, when it was her own child, it still hurt the hearts.
For that reason, her eyes bore coldly down on him, like stones being thrown. She projected as much disappointment as she could - and then some. The shame would make him rethink his sparring strategies, she believed, as well as his attitude.
"Pick yourself up," she finally said. "Wipe off the dust and ready yourself. We will try again in a moment."
"Yes, mother."
