Neil (Daneil)

Hmm okay so I don’t know any (Da)neils at all, but I do know someone whose maiden name was Neil.

Heather Neil is the mother of my first serious boyfriend and she’s just so amazing. We hang out all the time, we’re super close even though I don’t date her son anymore. She’s sort of like an aunt to me. She travels a lot for work and once she went to San Diego (we live in Connecticut) and invited Andrew (her son) and I to go along. We were like 18 and 16 respectively? I’d already decided that she was really cool, but we hadn’t really spent a lot of time together at this point. But she got a seat on the plane away from us, let us do our own thing, rented a convertible to drive us around, researched a restaurant named Chloe to take me there specifically as a surprise (I got free dessert because that’s my name!) - she’s hella cool. But one of the sweetest things I’ll always remember was on that trip Andrew was in the bathroom - I think we were eating at a restaurant with the word “Naked” in the title - and Heather was telling a story about a friend of hers who was really close with one of her son's ex-girlfriends. There was something about a painting? I think the mother gave the girl a painting. But anyway the point was that this woman was really close with this girl and I tentatively asked if we could be friends like that. I was really nervous about it and I might have been about to cry (I was painfully shy for a long time) because I was really invested in her answer and her face just split into a huge grin and she said “of course!”. I’ve been like family to them ever since and it’s been one of the greatest blessings in my life. <3
