Filmed in Brooklyn during quarantine, the singer’s quiet contemplation is accompanied by charming illustrations and dreamy colours, in perfect sync with the track’s floating ukulele and pulsing beats, along with Maia and Carly Rae Jepsen’s entwining vocals.

mxmtoon is living the goddamn dream...

The US singer teams up with none other than the Queen of Everything, Carly Rae Jepsen, for the bittersweet ‘ok on your own,’ a sprawling ‘reminder that stepping away from a relationship isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather one of strength!’ that mixes balmy ukulele with sultry 90s RnB. If there was anyone you wanted to console you through heartbreak, it’s these two... (✿◠‿◠)

As Maia explains (via Pitchfork):

‘I was beyond excited to work on this track and have it be graced by Carly Rae Jepsen, someone who stands for empowerment and knows the themes of love and loneliness all too well.’

‘My hope for the song is that “ok on your own” can let people know that vulnerability is never something to be afraid of, and admitting you need time for yourself and support from a friend is sometimes a necessary step.

Sometimes relationships aren’t meant to work. It’s a bitter reality that many of us come to terms with at one point or another, but we all have to realize our own self worth before letting certain people into our lives! “ok on your own” is your reminder that stepping away from a relationship isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather one of strength!’

mxmtoon finds a place where nostalgia fades at the seams on her latest single ‘Bon Iver,’ a dreamy, finger-picked lullaby filled with ‘late night drives/My window, moon, and fireflies’ that explores a quiet ‘beauty/In the moments/And the spaces/In between.’

The video, meanwhile, is basically Maia’s audition tape for Disney’s next princess, wandering through a lush green field at dusk as little birds, moths and fireflies dance around her. 

As she explains (via The Line of Best Fit):

‘when we think of nightfall, we often associate it to the “end” of something. The “bon iver” music video is meant to counter that notion, and to spark thought over the possibilities that are ahead instead. 

‘a day does not just end when the sun goes down, you continue to find wonder and joy despite the dark, and a whole other world awaits you as the moon glides overhead. New beginnings are not limited to a rising sun, your world is what you make it whenever you choose to begin.’

And no, Justin Vernon doesn’t know the song exists... (¬‿¬)
