Thursday, November 29: Duskmachine, “I Feel No Pain”
Joe Comeau first came to prominence playing guitar for Overkill (his fronting Liege Lord for one album notwithstanding), but his work on Duskmachine’s self-titled second album felt more informed by his two-record tenure with Annihilator. Indeed, “I Feel No Pain” would’ve fit comfortably on Carnival Diablos or Waking the Fury, especially since fellow ex-Annihilator colleagues Russell Bergquist and Randy Black were powering Duskmachine’s rhythm section. Sure, neither Comeau nor Nikolai Wurk were shredders like Jeff Waters, but their riffing had that similar blend of technicality and thrash, and the tune was spiky, aggressive and precise in equal measure. It was by no means revolutionary, but as a counterpart to Annihilator, “I Feel No Pain” did its job efficiently.
