i've been thinking about getting a macropad recently and want to be able to cusomize it. do you know if there are keycaps made specifically for macropads, or can i just buy any blank keycaps, square or round, and they should be able to work just fine? thank you :)
As long as it’s a mechanical switch macropad, any old keycaps will work. Just make sure the caps match the stem type for your key switches.
Here is an example if several switch types (taken from here). Any keycaps with a + shaped socket should be interchangeable so you won’t need to worry about them. If a keycap listing says “Cherry profile” or “MX” you’ll be good.
Anything labeled as “low profile” or “choc” and “Alps” are a different shape however. That’s what the bottom two switches are, and these require specialized keycaps. These 2 are significantly less common in the keycap world so you shouldn’t have to worry about accidentally buying them.
