Prime Minister Dick Schoof has, for the first time, expressed his concerns about Isreal’s plans to invade and occupy the entire Gaza strip and “relocate” the Palestinian population. The plans are “worrying,” the Dutch Prime Minister said after questions from RTL Nieuws. “As far as the Cabinet is concerned, this is not the way forward.” Minister Caspar Veldkamp of Foreign Affairs has also asked the EU to investigate whether Israel is violating the EU-Israel Association Agreement by not allowing any aid into Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video message announcing an “intensive military operation” in Gaza in which Israel will occupy the entire coastal strip. According to him, the population will be “relocated.” According to Schoof, Netanyahu’s plans have “far-reaching humanitarian consequences,” mentioning first the Israeli hostages in Gaza and then the Palestinians who haven’t had access to aid in weeks while constantly being bombed. “Israel must adhere to international law,” Schoof said.

Oil and gas companies have reached an agreement with the government to increase drilling in the North Sea to make the Netherlands less dependent on imported gas. Green growth minister Sophie Hermans signed a deal in Scheveningen on Wednesday to exploit the 200 billion cubic metres of gas under the sea and in small-scale inland gas fields, which account for around 25% of the total. Offshore gas production has fallen from 39 billion to 8.8 billion cubic metres a year in the last two decades, as Dutch governments hoped the country could move to becoming gas-free after the shutdown of the Groningen gas field. But with 90% of households still relying on natural gas for heating, the government now says the country will need to maintain supplies until at last 2045.

The coalition parties PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB are woefully divided on the Netherlands’ climate policy. Climate Minister Sophie Hermans (VVD) wants to introduce additional measures in the spring to give the Netherlands a chance to achieve its climate goals. She couldn’t say what measures - the Cabinet is still working that out, she said. But the PVV and BBB are already against it, NOS reports. The Netherlands must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent in 2030, compared to 1990, as stipulated in Dutch law. Without additional measures, this target will almost certainly not be achieved, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) reported in the autumn. Statistics Nethelrands (CBS) reiterated that point on Wednesday. The decrease in Dutch emissions is leveling off, and more measures will be needed to achieve the climate goals, CBS said. More measures against climate change require money, and the Cabinet is still working on distributing cash flows in the Spring Memorandum, the spring update to the national budget. It is clear that climate policy is not a priority for this right-wing Cabinet. According to NOS, Hermans was clearly in a difficult position during the parliamentary debate on the climate policy on Tuesday. She stressed that she was working on measures to bring the climate goals back into sight, which she plans to present in the spring. She also repeatedly said that the Cabinet is “still working on a puzzle” regarding the climate policy and the budget. But did not say anything concrete.

They don't know what it is but they're against it, never mind that it probably won't be fit for purpose; it's written by a VVD minister. Their children will pay dearly for their neglect.

Dutch far right leader Geert Wilders is being sidelined by geopolitical developments elsewhere, writes journalist Gordon Darroch. Just three weeks ago Geert Wilders seemed to be a roll. Donald Trump was back in the White House and, together with his straight-armed right-hand man Elon Musk, was wasting no time in firebombing the apparatus of state, particularly international development aid, in a way that the Freedom Party leader could only dream of. Wilders himself had just returned from a conference of European nativist parties in Madrid, organised by the Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, where he hailed Donald Trump as the leader of a global revolution against the “extremist agenda of the woke left”. “As President Trump ushers a golden age for America we must ask ourselves: are we ready to do the same in Europe?” Wilders asked. By the end of the week JD Vance had made jaws drop across the continent with his speech at the Munich security conference at which he berated European governments for ignoring “the threat from within: the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values”. Values which, in Vance’s view, were being undermined by mass migration. It was music to the ears of Wilders, who posted an uncharacteristically long tweet at the same time, in which he about “left-liberal woke decadence” and claimed: “we have not stopped radical Islam but cultivated it”. But Vance’s speech turned out to be a turning point in other ways. It was the moment when Europe’s leaders had to swallow the awkward truth that the United States was no longer a reliable partner in global security. The following week Trump’s foreign minister, Marco Rubio met his Russian opposite number, Sergei Lavrov, to discuss not just ending the war in Ukraine, but restoring diplomatic relations and investment opportunities. And two weeks later, Trump and Vance subjected Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to a verbal mugging in the Oval Office with a bunch of attack lines that could have been scripted over vodka cocktails in the Kremlin. Vance’s speech aimed to tap in to the anxiety across Europe about mass migration that has driven support for hard right and far-right parties in recent elections. But his actions towards Zelenskyy have propelled geopolitical security to the top of the political agenda at the expense of migration.

The measure was backed by coalition party BBB and the ChristenUnie, but fell well short of the votes needed for a majority. The Dutch society of abortion practitioners (NGvA) urged MPs not to support the plan, arguing that it would put off women who needed to terminate a pregnancy. “Women are already worried they will get a lecture from us and be judged,” abortion doctor Monique Opheij told NRC. “Just the responsibility and the obligation to cite a reason undermines people who want an abortion.”

The Netherlands is scrapping development aid for programmes supporting women’s rights, higher education, sport and culture under reforms announced by PVV aid minister Reinette Klever on Thursday. Klever said all programmes in future “must directly contribute to our interests” to make the distribution of funding “more relevant for Dutch taxpayers”, Klever said in a statement. Unicef, one of the international organisations supported by the Netherlands, will lose 50% of its funding. The cutbacks of €2.4 billion a year from 2027 will leave €3.8 billion to be spent to promote Dutch interests in the areas of “trade and economy, safety and stability and migration”.

“We're not going to help unless it benefits us directly.”

The Dutch government will push through with its plan to send asylum seekers who have exhausted all legal remedies to Uganda, the Ministries involved confirmed to NOS. The plan is quite controversial because it goes against European regulations against sending asylum seekers to a foreign country without their consent. Uganda also has one of the strictest anti-LGBTQIA+ laws in the world. The plan by Ministers Reinette Klever for Foreign Trade and Development Aid and Marjolein Faber of Asylum and Migration involves asylum seekers who have exhausted all legal remedies and cannot stay in the Netherlands. If they refuse or are unable to return to their country of origin, the PVV Ministers want to deport them to Uganda, where they'll stay until they leave for their country of origin. The involved Ministries told NOS that this “innovative” plan is still in its early stages and will comply with the existing rules and legislation, including the European Convention of Human Rights.

Dutch MPs have voted to withdraw an invitation to the UN’s special rapporteur on the Occupied Territories to address parliament, after right-wing parties organised a new vote. Francesca Albanese had been asked to meet members of the foreign affairs committee on Thursday, following a vote in favour of inviting her. Since then, however, pro-Israel organisations and MPs have mounted a campaign calling for her to be “disinvited”. The pro-Israel campaign organisation Cidi, for example, described the planned visit to parliament as “worrying”, because it offered her “the opportunity to further spread her anti-Israel narrative”. It also called for demonstrations. Foreign affairs minister Caspar Veldkamp also said he would not “receive her”.
