So I know every has feelings about the Frog™ but I’ve been thinking about it and I honestly don’t think it could have been a past companion because there’s just no way they could have done it right. No matter what it would come off as the Doctor having a clear favorite and no matter who they chose, half the fandom would be upset by the choice. I think Maybe they could have gotten away with Rose or the Master or even some kind of vague reference to a past family but still. And I do think that the frog took a bit away from the emotion of it, but I honestly can’t picture how it could have been a companion without somehow diminishing the impact that the other companions have had on the Doctor. Hell maybe it should have just been all of them and face swapped every time the camera angle switched, but that also would have been kinda impossible just because of all the actors needed and it would still be ignoring the Really early companions. There was just no way they could win this one.
