Whenever I read The Silmarillion and I get to Aulë's awakening of the Seven Fathers before the awakening of the elves at Cuivienen, I picture dwarves in pre-historic caves, making charcoal paintings of wargs and woolly oliphants; holding torches over their heads and making stone statuettes; living in Middle-earth's even earlier version of the Chauvet Cave.
