Some pebble WIPS/exploration
More dwarf headcanons, this time about how they interact with children
● Most races will pick up their children gently, lifting them under the arms and carrying them on their hip
Dwarves will start walking, snatch the child up without stopping, and carry said child under their arm like luggage. But dwarven children are also very sturdy and resilient, so it doesn't really bother them either
● They also tend to play a bit rougher, but again, this is because dwarf kids are more resilient than, say, human children.
Fíli and Kíli are good examples, as the way Thorin would play with them when they were kids was literally by grabbing them by the leg and yanking them up into the air, and dangling them before tossing them onto their beds, only for them to come back for more. The game only stopped when Thorin got tired and couldn't keep up with them
Even Thorin, himself, loved to get thrown around by his father when he was still little. He used to 'sneak' up on Thrain and jump on his back, only to get yanked off and held upside down by his ankles, giggling as he continued to swing a fake sword at his father
● Dwarf children sleep like the dead. You are NOT waking those babies up unless the mountaint itself is collapsing
They sleep deeply and go completely limp, so it's not uncommon to see parents lifting them up by an arm or leg and carrying them like sacks of flour to bed, not because they're uncaring, dwarves are just built different and they know how sturdy their kids are. And they sleep through it, so it's not hurting them.
Kíli one time fell out of his bed and hit his head on the floor with a rather loud -thonk- noise, and Dís just picked him up and put him back because he slept through it, so there was no point in waking him
Fíli still likes to tell him that it was that moment that determined his current personality
● Dwarves don't really baby-talk to their kids, that's mostly a Hobbit and Human thing. They talk to their children normally, hence why they tend to speak a lot clearer and earlier than humans
Bby! Thorin, coming back in from playing outside: I for- *random toddler cough* I forgot my sword!
Balin, who helped raise him when Thrain was busy: 🤨 Are you cold?
Bby! Thorin: No :(
Balin: Are you sure?
Bby! Thorin: I put my coat on >:(
Balin: Where are your pants? And your shoes?
Bby! Thorin: *look down*
Bby! Thorin: huh :(
Balin: Go put them on
Bby! Thorin: *run off, likely to get distracted by something else*
● Despite how gruff and rough they can be, dwarves are very very loving toward their young and they form the deepest of bonds
After a toddlers hair has grown long enough, giving them their first braid is a big milestone in dwarf culture and often celebrated and looked forward to
It's not uncommon for parents to argue or discuss which one will give their child their first braid
Glóin was actually very upset that he missed Gimli's first braid, but after he got back home he crafted a new clasp for him and gave him a new one
I actually have a separate hc that Thorin was an energetic troublemaker as a child, but I think that would deserve it's own separate post
