EYES LIFT TO THE BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL ceiling of their office as he waits for the other to pick up. one hand sits patiently on the elongated table, fingers tapping against the smoothed, glazed wood. his many rings tapped against it, causing an echo to slightly fill the room. a nice distraction as he waited for the girl on the other end to answer the phone. he need not study the lies he would create in his head. this was all another scam for more money -- a practice he had become used to for years.
WHEN HE HEARD THE LOUD CLICK WELCOMING his voice from the other end, he looked ahead of himself. as if the woman had just entered the office before him. he got excited, and his heart began to race. he could already smell the money in his hands, feel it in his digits. his eminence’s brows raised from their regular position. time to work his magic.
❝ --- Yes, Mallory Jekyll? ❞
THERE WAS A PAUSE AS THE MAN AWAITED THE response of the woman. though it was common courtesy, it was almost like a test. to see if she really was fit for the job. when he heard her voice( even if she wasn’t singing ), the eminence’s heart almost melted at the sound. he heard no harmonious vocal tone, or a sweet voice of a young girl. rather, his eminence heard the sound of a party -- cheers and glasses tapping together as he and his colleagues celebrated number one on the richest in the world list.
❝ --- Good, good! This is your eminence, a cardinal from Popetown. My partners and I were wondering if you were at all interested in flying over and performing for one of the Masses coming up next week. We heard about you from one of our American sisters. They all had b r i l l i a n t things to say... ❞

the topic of love in j*kyll and hyde is just so…irrelevant?? not even a blind woman would fall for hyde
and tbh in my scottish lit tutorial last week we actually discussed stevenson’s approach to romance / marriage in his stories bc we were studying the south sea tales that week and like --- stevenson’s very particular about it?? when he puts marriage in it’s because it serves a direct purpose, and if it’s not a part of the plot, it’s not there. the marriage is a huge part of the plot in ‘the bottle imp,’ so you can tell it’s there because it furthers the story, but look at j*kyll and hyde or ‘the body snatcher.’ romance plays no role in the story, it doesn’t need to be there, so it isn’t. and that’s one of the things that i really enjoy??? that’s what irks me a lot about most films and books in a broad sense --- there are so many stories where the romance serves no purpose in the plot whatsoever and the story would be absolutely fine without it, but it’s shoved in ‘just because.’ because apparently stories can’t exist without heavy romance as a massive part of them.
ANYWAY. RANT OVER.
