Great color and detail images of this dyeing technique with examples from Japanese museum collections. The book is filled with gorgeous full-colour plates of vintage kimono, often pairing up a full garment shot with a detail. The text is sparse, but concise. The majority of the book is devoted to photos, but there is also a basic explanation of the techniques involved in yuzen dyeing in the back. It is by no means a full tutorial, but it helps the reader to understand the process and effort involved in making these beautiful garments.

Kyo Yuzen is a dyeing technique that has been handed down since the 8th century, but hand-painted Yuzen is said to have been established by Miyazaki Yuzensai in the late 17th century. Both hand-drawing Yuzen and Katayu-Yuzen, which have advanced techniques, are typical Japanese dyeing techniques for brilliantly colourful patterns.

Yuzen

A wonderful short video showing the Yuzen technique.

Yuzen is a beloved Japanese dyeing technique. Designs are applied using delicately cut stencils and/or hand drawn with a rice paste resist. Color, including the background, is then added by brush after the paste dries. After all the dye is applied, it is steamed to set the dyes and washed to remove the paste, leaving the classic white outline on the designs. In some instances a gold or silver is added to the white outline. Time consuming and highly artistic, this technique was a symbol of wealth and class.
