Re-posting a certain answer for those who want to save *spoiler*.

I haven’t gotten to test it out yet but rumor has it that if Captain Kirrahe was kept alive (in ME1) that he instead will die. But you CANNOT talk to him (Thane) prior to the attack. AT ALL. 

Kirrahe or Thane must be kept alive (talked to Thane if Kirrahe was killed) or the other salarian will perish by Leng.
