Young Giants steamroll hapless Demons
GWS Giants have capped off a stunning comeback to defeat Melbourne by 45 points. The win puts the Giants at 2-0 for the first time in their short history.
Played in front of 7,760 people at StarTrack Oval in Canberra, the Giants were able to over come a 27 point half time deficit. After half time the Giants slammed on 13.5 and kept Melbourne to a paltry 1.5. The Giants won the game 15.11 (101) to 8.8.(56).
It was the Demons making the early running, jumping the Giants to a four goal to nil opening quarter. It wasn’t until the five minute mark of the second term for the Giants to kick their first goal through Dylan Shiel. Despite the Giants getting more involved in the play, the Demons were still able to extend their lead at the main break.
At the beginning of the second had it was a different match. The Giants dominated from the outset and would go on to kick nine goals for the term. The Giants third quarter effort is their best for a quarter in the AFL.
Shiel again showed why Richmond have shown so much interest in bringing him back to Victoria with another best on ground display. Shiel ended the match with 26 disposals, three goals and a game high nine clearances.
Shane Mumford also put in a big performance finishing with 38 hit-outs, enabling the Giants to win the clearances 50-36.
Starting as the sub last week, Steven Coniglio pushed his case to be in the starting 18 every week. Coniglio finished with 26 disposals, two goals and eight tackles.

Jack Viney was able to keep Ryan Griffen quiet again, keeping Griffen to 23 disposals but with minimal influence on the match. Tom McDonald also won his match up against Jeremy Cameron. Cameron finished the game with just 12 disposals and one goal.
The Giants were able to kick 14 unanswered goals in the second half. The Demons only goal came through Ben Newton.
The only concern to come out of todays match for the Giants is big man Adam Tomlinson who was subbed out with an ankle injury mid way through the second quarter.
The Giants will look to make it three wins a row when they play Sydney next Saturday afternoon at the SCG. Melbourne will be trying to get back on the winners list when they come up against a rampaging Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval.
