This is some really nice subtle ground-laying for the E card arc. Of course, we know that Tonegawa cheats using the watch, but I do believe his observations about Kaiji's behavior might have had some truth to them- I see it as the watch perhaps confirming his observations rather than him purely relying on it- he's an extremely analytically skilled man, and its precisely that deadly skill that is later his downfall.
