Clear Soul Forces - Still ALBUM REVIEW

I’ve always felt like Detroit’s hip hop scene is pretty under-appreciated. Clear Soul Forces are one of the entities in Detroit that are keeping their scene interesting. They initially burst into hip hop with their hit, Get No Better which ended up on their 2011 debut album, Detroit Revolution(s). My first introduction to them was their second album, 2013′s Gold PP7s. Even though there are plenty of rappers in Detroit that don’t sound like them (Danny Brown, Royce Da 5′9″, Nolan The Ninja, Quelle Chris, RSXGLD), members Noveliss, Ilajide, Emile Vincent and L.A.Z. have kind of created a sound that a lot of contemporary rappers from their city use probably without even realizing it. CSF fans probably know the sound I’m taking about. If you don’t, give Gold PP7s a listen. Ilajide tends to handle the majority of production, which I think is perfect for them. The lack of Ilajide’s production was why I wasn’t crazy about their last album, Fab Five (I do like Nameless’s production on this album though). After Fab Five, each member did their solo things. I have only listened to Noveliss’s solo projects out of the group though (check out my Cerebral Apex review). I feel like Noveliss has a flow and style that is so unique to just him that it makes him super interesting to me. Still is their first album since splitting off to do solo work and it feels like the most monumental release in their discography. Still is CSF at their most versatile and most ambitious. Even though I have liked their albums in the past, they do come off as bloated with the first few listens. This new album is concise and not overwhelming to digest. There is so much variety on this album with production, props to Ilajide. There are songs like Don’t Stop with the signature style, but there are choppy loops like the Swordplay Remix and upbeat songs like Pump Pump. Not only is the production more varied but the way the four members rap is also more diverse. L.A.Z. tends to have the most laidback flow out of the four but he came through with some fast paced verses on this album. Ilajide tends to use multiple flows on a track and he speeds up his flow in the middle of a bar which I like a lot. Emile Vincent has an exciting cadence that reminds me a lot of Phife Dawg and he showed so many different flows on this album. He was really flowing on Dinner Time but he also did this spoken word style on the Still Enterlude, which is really different for a Clear Soul Forces song. Noveliss’s flow doesn’t change very often but again, I’ve always felt like his flow is super different and it’s his signature flow that most rappers do not use. They’ve improved a lot on hooks compared to their previous albums. It’s not like their hooks have ever been bad but sometimes a repeated phrase as a hook doesn’t work for every song on an album. A good hook is usually more pronounced and that is what they are like on Still. They are also a lot more catchy. That hook on They Shootin goes through my head frequently. Even though Clear Soul Forces have been around for a while and have remained underground, I feel like this album is a sign that they are still in their prime.
