Depends on the book. Some skip them, some say “footnote” and read it, some do a sound or musical cue to let you know a footnote is happening.

I don't, but I'm pretty sure that was one my school had a student account for - you might might want to check with your dept/prof.
There was a student account but it's not working at the moment. Everyone else finished this module in May and I think the account must have expired shortly after. This is one of the perils of catching up with certain modules on my own rather than retaking them with next year's class. I've been saved though - a certain analoguerock has helped me out (my new guardian angel).
