Into his favorite medium bowl, confectioners’ sugar and flour sat atop each other before mixing with butter underneath the tines of a fork. When it became a crumble, caring hands gently added beaten eggs and his own special from scratch vanilla extract brought to school. Stray flour attached to his clothes, but the single-minded youth paid no notice.
Egg Tarts were not something Cardinal considered himself an expert on. In fact, it would be only the third time he’d made them. Each previous attempt had some minor flaw he’d duly noted and sought to fix. Third times were always the charm though, right? It had better be so that the treats could actually find themselves in the hands of their desired recipient, the person who’d expounded on their deliciousness to him in detail, Goo Jaein.
After filling had been placed in shells and the desserts put into a pre-heated oven, lengthy legs paced the entirety of the kitchen area in between cleaning attempts. Fingers jangled at sides and familiar pins of nervousness pricked at his stomach. Every ounce of willpower was needed to keep him from flinging open the oven to check on them in thirty second intervals, but he managed to wait.
At last with golden brown crusts, the treats were taken out to cool and left on a rack. Their maker headed back to his room to change out of the powdered sweater not sparing a thought to the intended surprise’s lack of defense from hungry intruders.
