Superuse Studios - Eamescape Project, May-June 2012
The strict quality control standards of Vitra turn thousands of well designed cast aluminium parts from Eames chairs into waste for small defects in the chrome finish. A second design waste stream is formed by colour changes of plastic chairs:
Pantone chairs, and the famous Eames A-and Sshells. Positioning the Eamescape under one of the cherry trees opposite the museum of Gehry, and with a good view on the Ando and Herzog de Meuron buildings attaches the object firmly to its surroundings. The amount of waste used to build the Eamscape could allows us to build similar objects in center courtyards and gardens of all important public buildings of Europe. Project Realized by 2012Architecten (Cesare Peeren, Constance Bucklien, Benjamin Stainier) & Pieter de Jong.
Harvest map
Our Harvest map is centralized into the Vitra factory and its packaging companies. We used, the Eames bureau chair’s aluminium frame, some loose metal pieces and some hard wood offcut of a packaging factory connected to Vitra.
We were Designing the main lines by analysing the possible connections and understanding how the material is giving us a design.
Building on site
Our idea was to create a bench / landscape which can be used in many ways: reading, speaking, drawing, looking. We spent two weeks working on the Vitra workshop to realize the project. Knowing the strict quality control of Vitra, we decided to realize an object with perfection and thin details. We used long thread that we slided through each frame and a steel tube to space them. The strips of hard wood were sanded and planed, then connected with rivets to the aluminium frame. We oiled the wood and together with the chromed aluminium, the eamescape was a new looking in the Vitra park. Our goal was successful, many people asked us how we realized this “new art piece”. They could not believe that we were using only the waste of Vitra. Our final object was 10 meters long per 5 meters wide per 1m70 high.
