One of my fall favorites

Two days ago and still August, but one red maple had already, as Thoreau put it, “[run] up its scarlet flag on that hill-side, which shows that  it has finished its summer’s work before all other trees". I remember this one, and by the time the ones around it turn red, its leaves will all be down.

These color photos are from October 1906, approximately six months after the San Francisco earthquake.  They’re not recent colorizations, but actual color images produced by Frederick Ives at that time.  Ives had developed a complex color process that produced a layered image called a Krőmgram.

The top image is a desolate scene on Market Street near the Flood Building; the second image is a rooftop view from Van Ness Avenue toward City Hall (on right); the third image is a street-level scene near City Hall.  All images come from the two links below, where more information is also available.
