Oliver Cromwell
English military and political leader Oliver Cromwell was born on this day in 1599 near Cambridge.
Cromwell served as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1653 until his death, acting simultaneously as the head of state and head of government. One of the most controversial figures in the history of the British Isles, Cromwell was called a 'military dictator' by Winston Churchill but a 'hero of liberty' by writers and historians such as John Milton, Thomas Carlyle and Samuel Rawson Gardiner.
Featured here is a silver and gold pocket watch said to belong to him, which can be seen on display in the Ashmolean Story Gallery (Gallery 2) when we are open.
