83. “When I’m with you, I’m happy.”
The moment you met Calum at Luke’s annual Christmas party, you knew you’d become great friends. You shared common interests, whether it be a love for dogs or your similar music taste. He spent the entire night finding out the little details about you: which city you grew up in, your current field of study, even your first pet’s nickname. He listened intently, and took the time to get to know you. It was something you’d never experienced before.
Today was nothing new. You both laid beneath his white sheets, your forearm draped across his stomach while an old episode of Grey’s Anatomy played on the screen. It was your favourite show to watch together. His fingers drew delicate circles on your spine as he spoke, “Can I ask you something?” His voice seemed nervous, before gulping down the obvious knot in this throat. You two were honest about everything in your friendship, finding no room for secrets. You tore your eyes away from the tv, tilting your head up towards him, “Of course, Cal. Anything.”
He reached for your hand, rubbing the pad of his thumb over your soft skin. “Is something wrong lately? You’re often quiet.” He began, a frown evident on his lips the moment the words left his mouth. Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion almost instantly, your eyes searching for his gaze. “Are you bored of me?” he continued, his brown orbs meeting yours for the first time. You pulled your hand away from his grip, connecting it with his soft cheek. “Why on earth would you think that?” You breathed out a light chuckle, grazing your thumb over his plump lips, “I’ll never get bored of you, babe.”
But Calum was half-right. Lately, work had been extra draining for you. All you wanted to do every night was eat, sleep, and cuddle with your best friend. And although the silence was peaceful for you, it was painful for Calum. He wanted to talk about your day, what you did at work, what you ate for lunch. He adored listening to your gossip, and the stories you’d tell. As the chuckle left your lips, he felt embarrassed by his question, internally hitting himself for even asking such a thing.
“I miss your stories, they’re the best part of my day,” His fingers laced with yours before he continued, “I just assumed you were mad at me.” You felt sadness at his words. You never intended for your frustration at work to effect your friendship with Calum. Guilt seeped into your heart as you rose from the mattress, placing yourself onto his lap with your knees either side of his waist. “Calum, I’m so sorry. I didn’t want to bore you with my problems,” Your small hands cupped his cheeks, leaning forward to press a delicate kiss atop his nose. A smile spread across his lips at the feeling of your touch. “When I’m with you, I’m happy,” he sighed, “so I want you to be happy too.”
He placed a gentle peck on your cheek before pulling away slowly. Your returned to your previous position, your hand resting atop his lower tummy once again, “For lunch, I had a salad. I was thinking about going veggie.” He giggled at your words, peering down at you once more, “I wondered when you’d join the cool crew.”
