AND THEY’RE OFF! A flurry of boats scurry out to sea to catch lobster on this first day of the season. It’s a festive December 1, with gentle snow falling on an indifferent ocean at peace with itself. My friend, Bill, is also out there right now. He prepared for months for this day, painting buoys and traps and prepping his vessel for whatever the Atlantic presents. This ancient harvest practice will extend for some time, undaunted by harsh winters. Relationships are tricky though. Human and sea, Indigenous and fisher people, nature and nurture. A delicate balance so easily tipped in favour of one over another.
