does the ocean speak? what does it say?

The ocean is just The Ocean, as far as i can tell.

the tides, however, esp since they have to do with the moon, are looked to for a suggestion of how the moon is doing (portents, weather, etc). so they don’t Speak, per se, but what they do says things.

Which EOTM character has the most sass? Is it all for show?

4 and 8 are both Very Sassy, though 8 is more smug ‘i told you so but i’ll help you pick up the pieces’ and 4 is more ‘you’ve disappointed me in about five different ways, let me tell you each of them’. In bigger group events, you can find them next to each other, giggling to themselves into mugs of drink.

tell me about team mom and dad from the East of Moon c:

You find 3 in the middle of the woods, a thin trail of firesmoke above the treetops leading you to a small cabin. She’s tending the fire, and when you poke your head through the doorway, she says she felt you coming, and would you like some stew?The trees whispered your arrival, your footsteps sounded you coming up the path. She is nice, and can tell you all about the local flora if you ask. She’ll probably tell you more about flora than you thought you needed to know.Don’t put that in your mouth, she says, it’s got funny side effects, like moving backwards or speaking in tongues.

You find 9 at the top of a mountain, not quite past the cloud layer, in a dilapidated temple. They are standoffish, disdainful of you snooping around this old sacred place. They don’t quite belong there either, but the mountain sings to them, they know its stone blood, and your footsteps loosely echo and murmur enticement to the surface.When you show them the fields, they smile. You show them the forests, and they teach you to hunt. You show them the ocean, and they don’t believe you. They stand ankle-deep in the waves and turn from the sea to the mountains, and back, and back. It is one thing to watch the water from the mountaintop, and another to wrap yourself in it.Let me show you, they say, if you do it like this it will stay for years to come.

When you introduce them, 3 is entranced by 9′s horns, and 9 by the lush greenery somehow tucked into 3′s short hair.

when did you originally get the idea for East of the Moon? was it inspired by something?

it was a combo sort of general inspiration and a desire for the Perfect Media.

I love exploration, and small package stories you find by discovery. anything by Nifflas will hit all of my buttons. Cave Story, Minecraft, pretty much any roguelike, Sword&Sworcery, Bastion, Firewatch.... That kind of thing! I want/ed to make something like that, but with a little bit of modular freedom for the player’s playstyle.

The name came because i love myths, and East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a fairytale about seeking something, with a touch of ‘traveling past the ends of the earth’ to get it.

and now here i am in development heck, making all these cute characters!!

why small wing boy got small wing

he was born with it! It was a more proportional size when he was younger, but it stopped growing bigger when he stopped growing taller.

It’s not uncommon for single-winged harpyn to exist, but he stopped growing at a young age, so it’s just Very Small. (he likes that it doesn’t get in the way as much as a full-sized wing would)

The signature food of each region?

The docks city is known for its spicy seafood, a mix of nearby farms and local catches. Think curry but fish.

The cliff town on the east side is Pastry Central. Flatlands for some farms combined with onshore wind means the mills are always turning.

Anything that comes out of the forest settlements has berries or nuts in it. It’s also where all the Fancy Herbs come from.

The vacant town at the foot of the volcano used to have literally the best slow-cooked meat anywhere.

The destroyed city in between the mountains was known for Strange But Delicious food. Mage food. Also, candy.

The few desert settlements had foods rich in liquids. Desert melons and cactus fruits and stews.

Waterside settlements are usually fisheries, but also make a peculiar sweet/salty ice cream combo that people travel for.

haaaah. mostly because i haven’t gone through other free-to-use music places yet.

(but also because i love kevin macleod songs.)

i like using music that isn’t connected to other things already. so, for example, i wouldn’t want to use a song from ico (as inspiration/dev bg music) for an important location, because that song already has a memory associated with it.

Tell me about the most northern cave in East of the Moon.

the one at the moon lake! yes. i love that cave. and the lake.

that cave is a secret exit branch off another cave at the foot of another mountain (there’s some puzzles in the way). it’s one of two permanent places you can see the moon, and the only ‘lucky’ one, where you can see it reflected in water.

the cave system itself is water-worn, stalactites from condensation litter the ceiling, the floor slick-smooth from the flow of the spring lake. it’s got a relatively narrow mouth ( 6 has problems fitting through it), but it’s been carefully and respectfully widened by moon-seekers.
