We’ve all heard the phrase, and probably even said it before, “that’s easy for you to say.” But the older I get and the more people I encounter, and places I see, I realize that more often than not it actually wasn’t “easy for them to say.” We often look at people’s surroundings, the amount of money they have, potential, skills, etc and make assumptions that couldn’t be further from the truth. For example when people think of Hawaii they think, palm trees and beach breeze, we often don’t think of the high rate of dual income families that are homeless. We often hear someone in Hawaii share something and think “easy for you to say” you live in Hawaii. When we see wealthy people sharing something they are afraid to do but are doing it anyway, we don’t see the depression or anxiety they might be dealing with or the road they took to get where they are, and sometimes we think, “easy for you to say” you have money. I try to challenge myself daily to consider that.
