No water or chewing, just the sheer grit and gumption to dry swallow the biggest and most painfully shaped pill to ever exist and then embed a sword in her forehead

What is wrong with both of them that they crave the minerals so?

Reminder that this is a LONG book so I'm skipping talking about a lot of things.

Alexander Cunningham

In 1843,he identified the ancient site of Sankisa and in 1848,he offered a scheme of archaeological investigations to the Government of India.

He was the founder of the ASI(Archaeological Survey of India)

With that said, although most of his work was to uncover ruins of various Buddhist temples and a lot of Indian history,he also wanted to help the British public "religious", that is,help colonize the country further through trying to increase christianity in India.

This is a sort of reminder to not put any British figure during the times of colonial India on a pedestal,because a lot of them did want to colonize and convert the country in one way or another(and most of the figures were also pretty racist)

Anyways,as I said before,he founded the archaeological survey of India (which i actually wish to join one day,lol) so that's nice.

This page talks quite well about where the Aryan invasion theory came from

And as the book puts it

"This model of the study of the ancient Indian past replicates the approach to the study of the past of Black Africa during this period when the black Africans themselves were dubbed as mere passive recipients of various impulses coming from outside their geographical domain. It is now an acknowledged part of modern historical scholarship that various socio political issues affect the way in which the past is reconstructed at a given point of time."

On another note,the Viceroyalty of George Nathaniel Curzon was very significant in the growth of Indian Archaeology as a subject. After the Boer war,a conflict between south African colonies and the British,the latter became worried about It's power and led to the notion of a "civilising mission" within it's territories,and Britain started it's major conservation movement. It's likely that Curzon's attitude to archaeology in India was affected by these developments.

He achieved a centralized government direction for archaeology in India and for each of it's branches like conservation, exploration, excavation and epigraphy.
