cassandra the matriarch

Cassandra is a conflict-mediator and a matriarch-like figure (also, Nova tends to back her up). She had high-minded ideals when she was young. Ambitious, "make the world a better place" kind of thing.

She was probably the Alexander and Eli’s Pokemon. Traveled with them for a while. When she was younger and more idealistic, she was full of high hopes before she began travelling, having a vague idea of meeting people and changing things.

Cassandra mediated a lot of Nova and Ebon's power struggles, frequently putting them both in time-out. It's like she firmly says, "Kids, no.” She frequently tried to talk to Ebon privately to understand him more so she can be more helpful, but Ebon was distrustful and hostile towards her. He was like a wild beast. He thought of her disdainfully as the "old woman". Joke's on him coz she's powerful enough to flatten him without lifting a finger. She was quite dismayed by all this ill feeling from him and among them all, and privately questioned if Nova made the right choice.

She can be very firm and insistent if the need calls for it. If she sees Nova or Ebon working too hard, she absolutely will insist that they take a rest and will not budge until they do.

struggles with Ebon + info about Solange

Nova had trouble controlling her Gabite, Ebon. As a Dragon-type, he was powerful and aggressive, and liked to push boundaries. My headcanon is that Dragon-types could sense when trainers were non-assertive/passive/’pushovers’, and would push boundaries, because they might think that these trainers were ‘unworthy’ or ‘weak’.

She didn’t have the certainty that she gains when she grew older, so there were constant power struggles. Ebon would purposely disregard her commands and orders. He was impatient and reactive towards her. She was introverted and struggled to successfully integrate into the external world, and he could sense that.

When Ebon challenged her, it sometimes ended in his favor. She doubted her abilities in those times, and they both knew it. She had to have Cassandra use her psychic powers to control him. She couldn’t do it herself. But there were moments when they were in accord, when they both had the same ideas. Ebon challenged her in a way that’s like ‘tough love’. He wanted to bring out the power and potential he sensed in her.

After a while, they became close, each grew on the other, and they grew fond of each other. The power struggle evened out, Nova became more in command of Ebon, who respected her more. He stopped trying to usurp her authority, and listened coz he truly respected her.

By the time Solange came along, Nova and Ebon were getting along better now.

You see her fond regard for him. She is sometimes very amused by something Ebon did and she pats his shoulder joint fondly/affectionately. Or the care she takes when she grooms Solange.
