KOMMISSARY
Pop-up Store Launch
Where: Common Area, @hub_ml
When: February 18, 2017, 11AM-11PM
#Kommissary is simply defined as a store or supermarket for military personnel. Aesthetically, GEN. MDSE. pays homage to this transient military architecture with light tropical materials reminiscent of the demised American bases in tropical Manila.
ESCOLTA, was derived from the Spanish word escoltar, meaning "to escort” which became a hub for the military and expats. Commissaries came to existence when the military came during the American period. The street was lined with shops and boutiques selling imported goods from China, Europe and elsewhere in Latin America that arrived in the nearby port of San Nicolas. By the late 19th century, Escolta flourished into a fashionable business district hosting the city's tallest buildings.
GEN. MDSE. wanted to showcase this "history" through the Kommissary pop-up by inviting the current locus of Filipino designers and brands in the post-colonial present, as a result of decades of change and a culmination of what fashion and its systems are today.
This pop-up is part of GEN. MDSE.'s joint exhibitions at the First United Building - Threading the Landscape - an exhibit that reassess the values of things, history and systems that revolves around Escolta and Manila, and LUXEGROCERY, a campaign treated as installation art located at the HUB.

THE DRAWING ROOM ESCOLTA
TDR Escolta Soft Launch
Where: The Drawing Room Escolta, @hubmnl
When: February 18, 2017, 11:00am to 11:00pm
The Drawing Room is a contemporary art gallery in Makati City, Philippines. It features artists from the Philippines whose respective practices investigate the complementary and often merging position between their oeuvre and lifestyles. The gallery exists in a dynamic and in-depth platform with its artists, presented in The Drawing Room’s support in interdisciplinary artistic processes. The artists maintain a priority towards specific cosmopolitan and urban thinking, as well as personal synchronicisms between histories we inherit and histories we are shaping. The Drawing Room’s stable of artists rarely documents. Their research-based and experientially-grounded methods represent the Philippines in constant frenetic flux – very removed from journalistic portrayals of its historical and contemporary society. However, the artists from The Drawing Room depict the ensemble of realities that make up a complex society. With a strategic and critical program of exposure, The Drawing Room propels these artists in international art fairs and through collaborations with institutions and other commercial venues local and abroad.
Founded by Cesar Villalon Jr. in 1998, The Drawing Room began as a specialist venue that moderated the revitalising of works on paper. It reinforced works by Filipino draughtsmen and soon, this alcove of a particular medium expanded to various artistic formats grounded on defined sensibilities that map the complex scope of thinking attributed to the contemporary terrain of Philippine art. The Drawing Room values the depth of relationship a gallery offers to the artist, mediating career design even in the breadth of global competence.
