Bateleur Terathopius ecaudatus

Bateleur (A French word meaning Acrobat) is by far one of the most beautiful birds to see in the Kruger National Park. On our recent private Cape to Kruger tour, we had several close sightings of these marvellous birds of prey. One way to tell male and female apart is to look at the trailing edge of the wings. While both have black trailing edges, the female’s is narrow and the male’s is broad, which can be seen in this photo. Even though the Bateleur can feed on prey such as small birds, mammals and reptiles, they are also often seen feeding on carrion.
