My #picturebooks search turned up so many cool things, some great books and pictures. I enjoyed everyone’s posts especially the one of a yellow dog and they have written about always wanting to become a children’s book author #dog painting. I became curious and followed them wanting to see if it continues. You cant tell the age of the person and I am curious if it is a child will this ambition continue, if it does I would love to see more yellow dogs.

I also saw a picture on a post that grabbed me straight away, it reminded me of a children’s book I had and loved. It had nothing to do with that book but familiarity has become my favourite thing about #picture books.

Curious Kids: why does English have so many different spelling rules?

·         So accurate and relatable

·         It is always hard to remember even now in 3rd year of uni

·         For grade 5 / 6 students this is excellent they can relate

·         Excellent for grade 5/6 students because they are not often told    something is hard to understand

·         So many great ideas for activities can come from this -boggle games-matching word games- creating charts to remember word rules

·         The English language is hard to learn, games surrounding the issue of spelling rules creating engagement will help students learn

Prompt 4 2018

On this placement I went back into the same grade one class as last semester and this time I took a lot more teaching on and I ended up enjoying it a lot more. I basically taught the second week including French (I do not speak French) and science which I actually really enjoyed even though I was really nervous. My mentor teacher was a bit too free range for me I get very nervous and flustered easily so I would of appreciated a bit more help from her. As it turns out though she was really happy so I was really happy.

As I said I taught everything the second week which of course included reading and writing. In the first week I couldn’t take reading because she was starting a new way of doing reading groups and she was going to be observed doing it. I ran it in the second week and it was 5 reading groups one reading with me and the other 4 choosing an activity to get done that day, there were 4 to get done in the week. It worked well but i was still getting used reading with a group and watching over the whole class, I like the idea of it but need more practice with the execution of it. I loved the books they had as well, the first week was the gingerbread man so all that week’s activities like the sentence sorts and sequencing were on that. Then they had the Three billy goats gruff. They also have sustained reading after lunch so for about 5 to 10 minutes they each pick a book or magazine to read. Short novels of captain underpants and fact books about spiders and sharks and snakes were the favourites.  

Writing for the week they would keep the topic of the same book which was a planned through all the grade one teachers’ idea. My mentor teacher allowed me to instead use the second weeks inquiry topic for them to write on. A time where I felt proud, we had a group discussion about what it means all the different types and then they wrote it down and I picked some to share. They actually really enjoyed it and it was one of the few activities they all finished.

I always liked to do the reading however I have one beautiful memory of being read to in the classroom. I had the same teacher for grade 5 and 6 and in the same classroom so both years mesh with memories but I remember my teacher Mr O reading us Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He would stand at the front of the class while we sat at our tables and read for about 10 minutes I suppose or until the fidgeting would start.

I absorbed every word, including descriptions of everything. I wanted to know more but was reluctant to read the book because I didn’t want to skip in front of Mr O and miss out. I became a huge fan of the Harry Potter world and wanted to know everything I could about it. We were reading the third book at the same time the first movie just came out and we had a whole school function type thing Harry Potter themed with sorting into houses. Mr O would read out the newspaper quiz once a week and one week there was a question ‘what is author J K Rowling’s first name?’. The one girl in the class who everyone knew had read all the books was immediately looked toward with Mr O saying ‘ok Ashley tell us?’.

Being read to in a whole class setting made the entire classroom focused on taking that journey together. Together we were brought into Harry Potters world most of us for the first time and anticipated with each other for more.
