Crinkle Paper Bedding
I just recently moved to a new area so I spent a recent afternoon driving around checking out the neighborhood pet supply shops. One that I visited stocked bags of Eco Bedding. I haven’t been totally satisfied with any of the beddings I’ve tried so far. They’ve all been dustier than I would prefer. I’m a big fan of fleece mats with U-Haul furniture pads as an absorbent layer but one of my single CNs came with a Bass pan so I figure I might as well use some sort of loose substrate. What attracted me the most to the Eco Bedding is the fact that it’s basically dust free. I purchased a small bag to see if my boys and I would like it.
It turns out that my rats love it. They’ve never really ever spent any time hanging out on bedding before. With the Eco Bedding, they love pushing it around and building nest forts in it.
I laid down a sheet of craft paper on the bottom of the pan then covered it with the Eco Bedding. The $10 1.5lb. bag that I bought would probably last 2-3 cage cleanings. That’s a bit expensive, in my opinion. I started searching around and found that ordering 10lb. boxes online would save a ton of money but it’d still be pretty expensive.
While searching around online, I saw that crinkle craft paper is also used as a decorative package filler. I widened my search parameters beyond just the pet trade and found that Staples sells 10lb. boxes of crinkle craft paper for less than half the cost of Eco Bedding. They don’t seem to stock it in the stores but you can have it shipped to your nearest Staples location for free. I just picked up a box from my local Staples on the way home from work. It was only $18.29 before tax. The box is huge! I have a feeling it’s going to last a very long time.
