A three-wheeled, teardrop has won (RDSA) Americas competition Shell Eco-marathon, an annual competition that pits teams of students together in a race to build fuel-efficient vehicles.
The marathon was held in Houston, where the teams compete in one of two categories: a prototype, which focuses on maximum efficiency and Urban Concept, which takes into account passenger comfort.
Cars enter one of seven categories to work with gas and conventional diesel, biofuels, fuel made from natural gas, hydrogen, solar, or electricity.
For several days, the teams driving a fixed number of laps around a circuit, traveling as far as possible with the equivalent of a gallon of fuel. Organizers estimated energy efficiency and the $ 2,000 prize and the winner of each class.
What kind of engine does it take to get a couple of thousands of miles per gallon? A small one. Based on a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower 3.5 hp, eventually reaches a top speed of 31 mph.
Having said that, to maximize efficiency of driver averages about 19 mph.The team poses with the vehicle Alerion win. Here you can see the compact dimensions of the vehicle and how the driver has to put almost completely flat while driving.
