Bitches, what's the best thing you learned/did/saw at the Economecon? Any new nuggets of wisdom, or pictures of Pool Chicken you'd be willing to share? (And Piggy I hope you're feeling better after your cold!) ❤❤
WE'RE SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!! We funned ourselves right into Piggy catching a cold and being miserable for a week (definitely not COVID--tested twice).
Unfortunately, we did not play Pool Chicken... because we were too busy doing other stuff! I think this means we are still the reigning champions of Pool Chicken at all conferences we have ever been to. Right? Right.
Anyway, EconoMe was fucking fantastic. They're going to post videos of our presentation, so check their website regularly. And you can listen to the live episode of the Stacking Benjamins Show we recorded there. Listen to the end, at which point we do a live performance of our podcast theme song WITH EXTRA VERSES. Please promise you'll listen. You have no idea what a headache it is to bring a fucking guitar on an airplane.
But to answer your question... our favorite part was talking to the audience members. We were there with some of the preeminent experts on personal finance and financial independence. And while we absolutely love connecting with those people... we knew them already. We knew what they had to say. We learned FAR MORE from talking to the people who just came to listen and learn.
The attendees were the most diverse group I've ever seen at a money conference. I talked to men of color, women of color, gay folks and a trans woman, immigrants, people who spoke English as a second language, disabled folks... all of whom told me they felt welcome, heard, and represented. And I think that is a testament to the conference organizer, Diania Merriam, and her efforts to make a truly inclusive community for this conference.
So by talking to such a diverse group of people, and just asking about their stories... we learned a helluva lot. We stayed up way too late just so we could listen to them. Rest assured we'll incorporate their feedback into the blog and next season of the podcast.
And then there were the FANS! Guys, this was our first speaking engagement since the Plague Times began. And we did NOT anticipate being mobbed by a line of people waiting for selfies with us after our mainstage presentation. It was incredibly humbling to hear that people loaded up cars of their friends and roadtripped to fucking Cincinatti specifically to meet US. We tried to connect with each and every one of them, dragged a handful to lunch with us, and tried our best to express just how fucking grateful we are that they like us even a tiny bit. Humbling, surreal... and a little intimidating? Like, we know our follower count. But it's very different to put faces (well, half-faces as we were all diligently wearing masks) to the people who follow Bitches Get Riches. Meeting them and learning their stories installed in us a sense of responsibility to do right by them.
Anyway, that's a bunch of word vomit about EconoMe. We loved it. We're definitely going back for the next one, even if we're not asked to speak again. And let's be real: there are far more important and intelligent people who should be addressing a room of a thousand people at 10:30 in the morning!
