Dyeing with Red Cabbage -
I used the same method and same timings as the experimentation with the red onion, although I separated the mixture [PH7] in to different glasses to adjust the PH with different ingredients.
Red Cabbage and baking powder = Navy blue
Red Cabbage and Apple Juice = Fuchsia
Red Cabbage and Vinegar = Magenta
Red Cabbage and Detol = Emerald Green
Red Cabbage and Washing detergent = Pale Green
Although the solutions in the glasses turned in to a variety of different hues , not all of them transferred on to fabric as vibrantly.
Method 1 - Boiling the Red Cabbage - Soaking the fabric in one of the above ingredients , and then adding to the red cabbage and leaving to cool.
Method 2- Boil Red Cabbage , leave to simmer for 45 mins, add the additional ingredient and the fabric and leave to simmer for 30 minutes.
Method 1 was not particularly effective when it came to colour vibrancy, the additional ingredient almost acted as a barrier .
Method 2 was a lot more effective , however my options were limited when it came to being aware of toxicity when boiling, I was reluctant to boil the washing powder , or the Detol on the hob for 30 minutes due to the possibility of harmful fumes.
I am very pleased with the shades produced by the red cabbage, and I wish to further this experiment and attempt at finding a way to push the colour limitations further when it comes to transferring on to fabric.
Brown Onion and Turmeric
I also attempted dyeing with brown onion and turmeric which proved to have pleasing results also . The turmeric was highly vibrant , and produced beautiful samples.
The brown onion I was satisfied with but believe there are more possibilities with this dye stuff,
I had a few creative accidentally where during the drying process some of the samples overlapped each other and actually absorbed elements of each others colour ..I will embrace this and attempt some mixing of colours when I became more confident with my processes.
